Biography

Gorge was born in 1834 [1] He married Mary Crawford in 1864 [2] He passed away in 1894 [3]

GEORGE BAIN. The place of another old resident of Balclutha is this week vacant, and a familiar face and figure will be missed in the streets. George Bain was known to all in the township and the neighbouring districts. He was. a man of powerful physique, was in the prime of life, and until recently everyone would regard him as a man with many years in store. But for some time past Mr Bain has been afflicted with Brights disease, which latterly superinduced partial paralysis and sundry other complications. A fortnight ago it was determined to send him to the Dunedin hospital whether he was removed on Saturday week. The medical attendants there at once pronounced tbe case as hopeless and the end as near. Mr Bain gradually got weaker and peacefully ceased to breathe on Sunday, He was a native of Berwickshire, Scotland, and a stone mason to trade. He' arrived in Otago per the Ben Lomond in 1863, and shortly after took up his residence in Balclutha, wbich has been his home ever since. He obtained the appointment of road inspector under the Provincial Government, which appointment he held for 12 or 14 years, until the abolition of the provinces, since which time he has been contracting and doing other work available. He took an active interest in public affairs, especially in local politics; but beyond being for a time a member of the Borough Conncil.he never aspired to a public position. He was a member of the local Masonic lodge ; was a great admirer of football, and was for a time president of the local club. The funeral took place on Wednesday last; and was very largely attended. . In. addition to the usual services of the Presbyterian Church the impressive Masonic service was conducted, at the grave. Mr Bain leaves a widow, two sons, and three daughters to mourn his loss. Much sympathy is felt especially for Mrs Bain, who, sometime ago, had her leg broken, and has been otherwise indisposed and unable to be about..[4]

Research Note

Is he the brother of Alexander Bain also of Balclutha?
