Biography

John Bain, son of John Bain and Helen / Ellen Alves, was born on 29 Sep 1867 in Forres, Morayshire, Scotland, United Kingdom.[1] His mother's maiden name is listed as Alves in the Scotland register.[2]

In the 1871 census John (age 3) was the son of John Bain in Forres, Moray, Scotland.[3]

In the 1881 census John (age 13) was the son of John Bain in Inverness, Inverness-shire, Scotland, United Kingdom. He was a Scholar.[4]

He started his architect apprenticing in 1883, to William Lawrie of Matthews & Lawrie in Inverness. He was studying at the Government School of Design in Inverness during this time. His apprenticeship ended in 1888 and he moved to Blanc & Gordon firm in Edinburgh and worked for a year with them. He then came back to Inverness and worked for Ross & Macbeth in 1889. By 1892 he'd moved to London, and passed his exam in March 1892. He was admitted to A.R.I.B.A. on 13 Jun 1892.

He and Alfred Swash (born in 1860) won a design competition for the Durham Road Schools in Newport, Monmouthshire in 1893. They then went into a partnership and practiced out of Midland Bank Chambers, Newport, Monmouthshire until 1905, when their partnership was ended. They both continued practicing on their own, John, from his home and Alfred maintained the Midland Bank Chambers address. sources: Scottisharchitects.org.uk web site [1] and [2]

John was involved in 11 major projects in Newport over his career. They are detailed here: [3] His contribution to the designs of Newbrige School in 1930 and Bassaleg in 1935 were mentioned in this report: [4]

He and Elizabeth Cook were married at Preston, Lancashire on 19 November, 1907 [5]. Elizabeth indicates her father's name is James Cook. Witnesses were G. H. fisher and S. S. Burrell.

In the 1911 England Census John (age 43) was a visitor and staying in a hotel in Bristol, Gloucestershire. He was an architect, and married. Born in Forres, Morayshire, Scotland. [5]

John died on 7 Jun 1935, in Newport, Monmouthshire, Wales, United Kingdom. The probate for his estate was confirmed on 14 Sep 1935 in London. [6] Record reads: Bain John of 28 Clyffard-crescent Newport Monmouthsire died 17 June 1935 Administration London 14 September to Elizabeth Bain widow and Alexander Alves Bain architect. Effects 6870GBP 17s. 11d. His son Alexander Alves Bain was born in 1909 - 1977.

He was possibly buried in Cluny Hill Cemetery, Forres, Moray, Scotland, [7] although no gravestone is shown. There is an inscription of the stone on the page.

There was an obituary published for him in the RIBA Journal of 12 October 1935. RIBA is the London Royal Institute of British Architects, of which he was a member from 1900 as a Associate. [6]

Research Notes

Scotlands People Birth / Baptism registers show all of John's siblings. They do not show anything for a John that may have been born in 1852 and died early.

There are records of other John Bain that went to United States, but this John Bain did not emigrate there. Sources being removed, now that the merge has been completed.

Sandy, please complete the merge of Bain-1869 into Bain-54 or add me to Bain-1869 so that I can do it. Linda has added sources here to support this. Kind of stuck now. Can't move forward til merge and cleanup is done. Thanks

Now that the merge has been completed, I created a Research Notes section stating that this John Bain did not emigrate to US, so that will hopefully stop any future merge proposals to the other John Bains. I also removed all the sources that had been in that section for the other people, so the profile is much cleaner now. Those sources remain in the Changes Log, if someone wants to check them.
Grateful for this rapid response. Yes, this is what I expected to hear. Monitor has gone to sleep twice already, but I want this on here before I give up again. Happy to work with you a bit to fix this family. Turns out the grandmother of this group, Marjory Norrie, had a twin sister Margaret Norrie, ho actually was my 5th G grandmother. Repairing the GEDcom tangle here will actually help to validate my own tree.

I agree that merging may be the answer but will check with my Trail Guide first. Hopefully we can resolve most of this by the weekend. Also, hopefully, this Infernal Machine will act appropriately for the rest of the day, but we never know these things.

Thanks again. Take care

Bain-1869 and Bain-54 are not ready to be merged because: Bain-1869 is not a valid child for this couple, as we can't delete the profile merging it into Bain-54 makes the most sense.

Bain-1869 and Bain-54 appear to represent the same person because: I found several sources in Family Search for this person, so I have added the Census from Scotland that have his parents, a marriage source and some census with wife Jeanette and children in California.

Bain-54 has the sources to state that he was born 1867. Sources found in Scotlands People for all of his siblings, but not a John that was born in 1852 when sister Ursula was born, so it is doubtful that there was 2 Johns born to this family.

Sandy, I added quite a few sources to the Bain-54 profile showing John with his parents and siblings, as well as his wife and children.
Hi Sandy,

I am currently working Tartan Trail. Curious to know if this person is in fact a child of John Bain and Helen(Ellen) Alves. GEDcoms can be very misleading. Hoping you can supply some evidence of that. Either for it or against it, any thing at all might help clear this up. Thanks so much.

no, this was imported early and he was a placeholder in my tree. the profile can be merged into Bain-54. I had started trying to fix the Barron tree import issues, but found this interface to be onerous and difficult to use and there were far too many for one person to fix alone, so I stopped.
