Biography

Daniel Bain was born in 1762 in Virginia, of Scottish descent. When a boy of fourteen, he enlisted in the Revolutionary War and served four years -- until the close of that war. Daniel was in the battle of Bunker Hill. Descendants of Daniel Bain, Jr. (who married Nancy Ann Kennedy ) have made application for membership in the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. His DAR records are found under the name, Daniel Bayne, with a disclaimer, "As such, the DAR assigns a single standard surname that covers variant spellings of similar surnames." DAR Records #A007694 indicate that Daniel's service is based on the 1883 county history, and they were unable to corroborate.

Daniel migrated West, to White county, Illinois, before Carmi was settled, in 1806. Daniel had been previously married with twelve children, when he was widowed and married his second wife, Susanna Dozier-Ary, who was also born in Virginia, of German descent. Susanna had six children, and all were living when they were married. They had an additional two sons and four more daughters. George W. Bain, born July 6, 1828, in Phillips Township, White county, Illinois, was the second son and fifth child by this union. George was about a year old, when his father moved to Terre Haute, Indiana, and remained nine years on a farm; then returned to Franklin county, Illinois, where he died. George then came to White county, to his half-brother, John Ary's, and farmed with him for one year. Daniel Bain, Sr. was a member of the Old School Presbyterian church and died in 1838, age 78, in Franklin county, Illinois. [1]
