Biography

Mary Baines was born about 1831 at Hutton Conyers in Yorkshire, daughter of Joseph Baines and his wife, Anne.[1]

On the 5th of October 1852 at St Peter in Leeds she married brushmaker, Joseph Simpson, with her sister, Hannah, as a witness.[2] They set up home in Arthur St where Mary kept herself busy working in a shop and raising her children.[3] Ten years later with a growing family they had moved to Shakespeare St. [4] Picture Leodis A Photographic Archive: Shakespeare St

By 1881 they had moved out of the city to Potternewton still with a couple of children at home. [5]

All of their children had left home by 1891 bur they were looking after two of the children of their daughter, Charlotte, who was married to Arthur Hurd. The children were Minnie aged 8 and Joseph aged 5. [6] Ten years later they were still looking after a couple of Charlotte's children, Louisa aged 11 and Elsie aged 10 who had lost their father the previous year. [7]

Joseph died in 1904 [8] and was buried in the Beckett Street Cemetery on the 7th of March. [9]

Mary died in 1909 and was buried at the Becket St Cemetery on the 16th of May.[10]
