Biography

This is the profile for the wife of William Warner of Ipswich, Massachusetts.

Date of Birth and Place of Birth

The date and place of birth of William Warner's wife is uncertain. Based on her estimated date of marriage of about 1611, she was probably born sometime in 1583-1593, with about 1590 being a reasonable best estimate. Since records show that at least her first two children were baptized in Boxted, Essex, England, she was probably born in or near Boxted.

Maiden Name

The maiden name of William Warner's wife is uncertain. Evidence suggests that she was probably the sister of Sarah (Baker) (Lumpkin) Stone and thus her maiden name was probably Baker. The proposition that she was the sister of Sarah (Baker) (Lumpkin) Stone is based on the following argument:

  1. Both Sarah[1] and William Warner's wife were probably born in or near Boxted, which is consistent with them being sisters.
  2. Sarah's date of first marriage[1] and William Warner's estimated date of marriage were within 3 years of each other, which is also consistent with them being sisters.
  3. In her 1663 will, Sarah bequeathed the bulk of her estate to "my kinsmen John Warner and Daniel Warner and Thomas Wells."[1] The fact that she gave the bulk of her estate to them suggests a close family relationship. John Warner and Daniel Warner were the two sons of William Warner, and Thomas Wells was married to Abigail Warner, William Warner's daughter. The simplest explanation for how John, Daniel and Thomas were all close kinsmen of Sarah is that William Warner's wife was Sarah's sister.
  4. In his 1666 will, Thomas Wells, the husband of William Warner's daughter Abigail, made a bequest to "our cussin Marye Baker (alis Love) of Colchester . . . in reference to an agreement between both my Bro: Warners and my self in ansur: to a request of our Aunt Lumkin (alis Stone) late deceased."[2] This language is again consistent with Sarah (Baker) (Lumpkin) Stone having been the aunt of John, Abigail and Daniel Warner, most likely by virtue of her being the sister of William Warner's wife.

After discussing the evidence of a relationship between Sarah (Baker) (Lumpkin) Stone and the Warners, Anderson acknowledges that most writers have proposed that William Warner married a sister of Sarah (Baker) (Lumpkin) Stone, but states that no evidence has emerged that confirms that relationship.[3] In the entry for William Warner's marriage, Anderson simply states that her maiden was "possibly Baker."[3] The 2013 profiles for William Warner's sons John Warner[4] and Daniel Warner[5] in NEHGS's Early New England Family Studies Project similarly that state the identity of William Warner's wife is unknown but state she was "likely a sister of" Sarah (Baker) Lumpkin) Stone.

First Name

The first name of William Warner's wife is unknown. The 1915 Ferrin-Prestin Genealogy[6] stated that her first name was Susannah, while the 1926 Simon Stone Genealogy[7] and some later secondary sources (which no doubt relied on it)[8][9] stated that her first name was Abigail. Torrey's entry for William Warner's marriage, which cites those and other secondary sources, notes both suggested first names but follows both with a question mark, indicating that Torrey doubted the creditability of the sources for those names.[10] In fact, no reliable evidence has been offered or found that supports the proposition that the first name of William Warner's wife was Abigail, Susannah or any other name. Anderson leaves her first name blank and does not discuss any theories about what it might have been.[3] The 2013 profiles for William Warner's sons John Warner[4] and Daniel Warner[5] in NEHGS's Early New England Family Studies Project similarly do not discuss any theories about her first name. If, as discussed under "Parentage" below, her mother was Margaret Baker of Boxted, widow, who made a will sometime in 1602-1612 which made bequests to her daughters Margaret and Sarie, then the first name of William Warner's wife was Margaret.

Parentage

Some online family trees state that the father of William Warner's wife was a man named John Baker. However, no reliable evidence for that proposition has been offered or found. The only Baker men who, based on the Boxted parish register, had children baptized in Boxted in 1580-1600 were William Baker and Thomas Baker.[11] If William Warner's wife was the sister of Sarah (Baker) (Lumpkin) Stone, then it is most likely that her father was Thomas Baker of Boxted, as the only baptismal record that has been found for a Sarah Baker (or variant spellings thereof) baptized in or near Boxted in 1580-1600 is the baptism in Boxted on September 4, 1586 of "Sarae Baker", daughter of Thomas Baker.[12][11] The theory that Thomas was the father of Sarah (Baker) (Lumpkin) Stone and William Warner's wife is further supported by evidence that Thomas may have also had a son John Baker who had a daughter Mary Baker who may well have been the cousin Mary Baker (alias Love) mentioned in son-in-law Thomas Wells' 1666 will.

If William Warner's wife was the sister of Sarah (Baker) (Lumpkin) Stone, her mother may have been Margaret Baker of Boxted, widow, who made a will sometime in 1602-1612 in which she made bequests to her unmarried daughters Margaret and Sarie.

Marriage and Children

The date and place of marriage of William Warner and his wife are uncertain. Based on the fact that their first-born child was baptized in Boxted in September 1612, they were probably married about 1611 in or near Boxted.

William Warner and his wife had the following children:

  1. John, bpt. September 9, 1612 in Boxted,[13][11][4][3] m. about 1640[4][3] d. after May 17, 1692 at Hadley, Massachusetts[4] (Based on the fact that John testified that he was about 45 in a deposition in June 1661,[14] John William Linzee in his Parker-Ruggles Genealogy had supposed that there were two son Johns: one who was born in 1612 and died young and another who was born about 1615-6.[15] However, Anderson thought it more likely that there was only one son John and that his stated age in his 1661 deposition was simply off by a few years.[16])
  2. Abigail, bpt. June 2, 1614 in Boxted,[17][11][3] m. about 1636 Thomas Wells probably in Ipswich, Massachusetts,[3] d. July 22, 1671 in Ipswich[18]
  3. Daniel, b. about 1616 probably in Boxted,[3][5] m. 1st by about 1640 Elizabeth [Denne?],[5][3] m. 2d July 1, 1660 Faith (______) Brown, widow of Edward Brown, in Ipswich,[5][3] m. 3d June 1, 1686 Ellen (Pell) (Boynton) Jewett, widow of John Boynton and Maximillian Jewett,[5][3] d. September 9, 1688 at Ipswich[5]

Death

The date and place of death William Warner's wife are unknown. No evidence has been found that indicates that she was ever in New England. The family account written by William's great grandson Daniel Warner about 1720 states that William Warner "came out of England . . . and brought over three children,"[3] suggesting perhaps that William did not have a wife who had accompanied them. Since William and his children probably emigrated to New England in 1635,[19] it is thus reasonably likely that William Warner's wife died sometime before that date, probably in Boxted. The reason no burial record has been found for her is probably because the Boxted burial records for 1616-1656 are missing.
