Biography

Henricus Backer was baptized September 26, 1660 in the Reformed Dutch Church of New York City, child of Jacobus Backer and Margrietie Stuijvest. Witnesses: Govert Loockermans, Margareta Riemers [1]

Henry married Susannah Winans. She was born February 9, 1667, in New Haven, Connecticut. Susanna was baptized in the Reformed Dutch Church of New York City, a daughter of Jan “John” Winans and Susanna Melyn. Henry and Susannah were married prior to the date that her father wrote his Will, which was in 1687/88.

On April 19, 1695, Henry Backer transferred land in New York City, New York, to his half brother, Daniel De Hart, son of their mother, Margariet Stuyvesant and her second husband, Balthazar De Hart. [2]

Children of Henry and Susannah are:

  1. Henry Baker born 1700, in Elizabethtown, died 17 March 1760 in his 60th year, married Mary Hatfield, who died April 13, 1755 in her 50th year. His will dated January 29, 1760 was proved April 7, 1760. Both are buried in Rahway, N. J. (see Research Notes)
  2. Jacob Baker died before April 9, 1730 as he is mentioned as deceased in his father's will. The will mentions Jacob's son Lawrence Baker and daughter Susanna Baker. He and family were residents of Staten Island.

Henry Backer (aka Baker) died February 4, 1734, in Elizabethtown, Essex, Province of New Jersey, and is buried in the churchyard of the First Presbyterian Church. [3] The inscription on his headstone reads: “Her lies y Body of Mr Henry Baker who Died Feb y 4: 1734, Aged 76 years. [4] From the inscription, we can deduce that his date of birth was circa 1657, even though he was baptized in 1660. This was a common occurrence in that day.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Henry by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Henry:

Baker-8214 and Backer-115 appear to represent the same person because: Believe this is the match.

I have him as the spouse of Susanna Winans, daughter of Jan Winans and Susannah Melyn. Only reference I have is the one listed.

Hi Cheryl, I have set the merge. Thanks

Wife is in proposed merge, as well as this profile. Daughter Susannah is connected to both profiles, possible duplicate, but dates and spouse don't match.

Since merges will probably be done, Susannah Baker-43810 and Baker-13884 need to be reviewed also. Merge of daughters is not proposed because either birth dates need to be revised or one needs to be unlinked.
