Biography

Kent (historic flag)
Emily (Baker) Poile was born in Kent, England.

Emily Elizabeth Baker was born at Wye, Kent, England, the fifth of the nine known children of Benjamin Baker and his wife Frances Cramp. She was christened in the neighbouring parish of Brook (her father's native place) on 17th July 1842.[1] The census of 1851 shows the family living at Wye, but, curiously, it includes a son Henry aged 9 which is evidently an error and should shown as a daughter, Emily Elizabeth, aged 9, the proof being provided by her baptismal record. (There was no baptismal record or any other reference to a son, Henry.)[2] Again, no Henry was listed when Benjamin and Frances emigrated, the immigration record at New York showing the family arriving aboard the 'American Eagle' as Bengamen 47, Elisabeth 42 (I don't know whether this is an error or not), Robt. 18, John 16, Emily 14, Edwd. 11, Richd. 8, Fanny 6, Eliza 3.[3] It would seem that Emily's brother William emigrated independently.

Not long after arrival in New York, Emily became acquainted with Robert William Pile who had also come from Kent. I do not know the date of their marriage, but their first child, Henry W., was born at Vernon, Oneida, New York on 28th December 1857. Emily was 15 years old at that time. (Note that marriage remained legal at 14 years old in New York State until 2017.) Henry was followed by at least five other children.Oliver-4952 20:26, 14 October 2018 (UTC)

Emily's younger sister Fanny Baker was living with her and Robert at the time of the 1865 census at Vernon[4].

Between 1877 and 1880 the family moved from New York State to Illinois where they were recorded at Squaw Grove, DeKalb County, in 1880. Emily died in 1894 and was buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Hinckley, DeKalb County, Illinois.[5]Oliver-4952 20:26, 14 October 2018 (UTC)

Research Notes

BIRTH: Date Issue has yet to be resolved.

The 1861 England Census in Maidstone, Marden Parish indicated Elizabeth Poile age 19 was a servant in the Henry Hayes household and she had been born in Rolvenden, Kent, England.[[1]]

Was this a different Elizabeth Poile?

That this person was not Emily Elizabeth, the subject of this Profile, is evident from the fact that, by 1861, Emily Elizabeth had already lived in New York State for several years and was recorded in the censuses there. In addition, Emily Elizabeth had Pile or Poile as her married surname whereas the unmarried person living in Marden, Kent, had Poile as her maiden name.Oliver-4952 21:20, 17 February 2019 (UTC)
