Biography

Robert "Boston Bob" Baker was born 29 Apr. 1800 in Lee, Virginia and died 2 Apr. 1871 in Crane Creek, Clay, Kentucky.[1] He is buried at the Boston Gap Cemetery at Ammie, Clay, Kentucky.[1]

He married first Sarah Rogers, daughter of William Rogers and Nancy Halcomb, on 25 Jul. 1820 in Clay, Kentucky.

Marriage Bond for Robert "Boston Bob" Baker and Sarah Rogers retyped off a copy of the original handwritten marriage bond:

Know all men by these presence that we Robert Baker, Jr. and Robert Baker, Sr. and William Rogers acknowledge ourselves indebted to the commonwealth of KY. in the amount of $150. Which payment will and truly to be made over time ourselves and each of heirs jointly and sincerely by the parents sealed with our signatures and dated this 24th day of July 1820.......
The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas the above said Robert Baker, Jr. is about to obtain a license for a marriage intended between the said Robert Baker, Jr. and Sarah Rogers---Now should there be no lawful cause to obstruct the marriage then this obligation shall be Void.....

After Sarah's death, he married Mary 'Polly' Couch about 1844 in Owsley, Kentucky. Mary died in 1846.

After Mary's death he married third, Hettie Cornett on 2 Sep. 1847 in Owsley, Kentucky.

  1. John C Breckenridge 'Brack' Baker, born on 27 Sep. 1859 in Clay, Kentucky; died 6 Nov. 1933 at Clay, Kentucky.[2]
  2. Daniel Baker, born 16 Feb. 1861 in Clay, Kentucky.[3]

Civil War Service

At the age of 63, on August 19, 1863 at Clay, Kentucky, Robert "Boston Bob" Baker joined Capt. John C. Wilson's Company D, 47th KY. Mounted Infantry. He served until December 26, 1864 when he mustered out at Lexington, Kentucky. His pension application states: While in the service and in the line of duty, on or about June 12, 1864, at or near the town of Cynthiana, in the state of Kentucky, while under command of Colonel Clark, and engaged in battle with the Rebels, under Rebel Morgan, was taken prisoner by the Rebels and made to march in double quick for two days and nights without food or drink. Morgan was forced to release his prisoners in order to escape General Burbridge. Since which time he has been entirely unable for any kind of manual labor and although he remained with the regiment until muster out, he never was able for duty any more. Boston filed for a pension on 3 Dec. 1869. Hettie, a widow of Boston, filed for a pension on 3 Jun. 1872. He is listed as being five feet, eight inches, with fair complexion, blue eyes, light hair, occupation-farmer, on his service record.

Census

Boston and Hettie lived in house #79 in Owsley Co., KY 1850 Census; house #780 Clay Co., KY in 1860;[4] Cavanaugh Precinct, Jackson Co., KY with four children in 1870.[5]

Baker-1654 and Baker-4911 appear to represent the same person because: These obviously are the same person, even though the place of birth needs to be cross-checked.
