Biography

James Baker was born about 1746. He died in March 1801 in Jefferson, Tennessee, United States.

James and his wife Mary (Unknown) Baker were married before 1770 in Rowan, North Carolina.

In 1787 James Baker was enumerated in the census of Captain Nall's District in Wilkes County, NC.^[1] He had a household of seven people: one white male over 21 (himself), four under 21, one white female (presumably his wife Mary), and one black person (aged under 12 or over 50).^[1] His brother Morris lived nearby in the same district with nine people in his household, all white.^[1]Their brother, Rev. Andrew Baker, lived in the neighbouring district of Captain Vannooy with eight people in his household, all white.^[2]

James and Mary are recorded in the First Census of the United States in 1790, in the Sixteenth Company of Wilkes County, North Carolina, with four sons under the age of sixteen, and two slaves.^[3] His brother Morris lived next to him, the head of a ten man household, and their brother Andrew lived nearby in the Tenth Company of Wilkes County, head of a six man household.^[3] Only James had slaves.^[3]

I, James Baker of Jefferson Co, Tenn. wife Mary;

my six sons: William, Morriss, John, Robert, James and Larkin

my two daus: Nancy and Mary

All an equal share of all my estate what shall be left at the marriage or death of their mother, Mary Baker, Executrix,

Son William Baker and Friend Richard Bailey, Executors.
