Biography

Samuel Baker was a convict on the Third Fleet.

Samuel (Convict) Odken Baker is thought to have been born about 1769, in Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, England, the son of Philip Baker and Mary Franklin.

Samuel was convicted in Bedford Assises on 3 July 1788 for stealing stockings and handkerchiefs to the value of 6 Pounds 15 Shillings and 3 Pounds 13 Shillings & 6 Pence in cash. He was sentenced to be hanged but his sentence was commuted to 7 years of Transportation. He left for New South Wales on the Convict Ship Matilda in January 1791 and arrived on 8 August, he was then sent on the ship Mary Ann to Norfolk Island.[1] .[2] .[3]

On 31 January 1813, he received a pardoned.[4]

Samuel Baker is listed on 15 February 1813 as owning a small dwelling, in Norfolk Island.[5]

He married Mary Ann Brennan in 1825, in Tasmania, Australia. They were the parents of at least 3 daughters.

Their children were:

  1. Mary Brennan (Baker) East (1816 - 1884)
  2. Elizabeth (Baker) Brown (1817 - 1854)
  3. Sarah Ann Brennan (Baker) Cole (1823 - 1899).

Samuel died on 7 April 1841 in the district of Launceston, Tasmania, aged 77.[6] and was buried in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia.[1]

Research Notes

There is no indication that despite being convicted at Bedford he was from Bedford. It seems more likely that he was from Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire.[7]

From his death record, he was aged 77, which would mean that he was born about 1764.
