Biography

Born in Canada. (Farr says all 5 of William Baker and Elizabeth Thomas' children were born in England, but have not found any evidence to support this claim. Farr appears to have made other errors regarding birth order and timing in this family.)

Emigrated to the US in 1860 to fight in the American Civil War along with his brother Noah.

In Ohio, married Abigail "Abbie" W. Bennington, a widow, in 1870. Two stepdaughters, Ellen and Lillie, and one stepson, Harry Bennington, have been discovered in records, but no children of his own.

Lived in Delaware. Apparently was injured severely and confined to a wheelchair, but occupation was listed as farmer in 1910 census.

There is a death certificate attested to by his step son, Harry Bennington, which gives John's father's name as Thomas. This appears to be a mistake, but John was from time to time visited by his half-brother Thomas, as known from Tom's journals (via Farr).
