George, the son of John and Helen Baker, was born at Stockport in Cheshire about the year 1857. His father was a wine merchant. HIs mother died between 1659 when his sister, Helen, was born and 1868 when John married Fanny Batten. Aged 14 in 1871 he was at boarding school at Hall Gate House, Doncaster. When his schooling was over he joined his father in business and by 1881 they were living and working in Fairfield, Derbyshire.
