Birth record states Douglass Baker was born on 18 Jan 1762 to Charles and Sarah Baker in Somersworth, NH. However, Douglass' full name appears to have been Alexander Douglass Baker after his paternal uncle who died 6 years before he was born.
Town Clerk of Shapleigh Clerk, 1/6/2006: INTENTION filed on 11-4-1797 between Douglas Baker and Mary Bagley. This intention can be found in Book 1, Page 114. According to the actual record, both parties were from Shapleigh.. In addition, the intention was filed on 11-4-1797 and it also states the marriage was performed on 11-24-1797, I do not have the actual marriage license but next to the intentions that time they listed the marriage date as well. (was the service performed elsewhere?) This differs from the marriage date given in the Edward Baker Genealogy by Nelson Baker, 1867 which gave a marriage date, without documentation, of February, 1798.
Nowhere in the censuses does a Douglass Baker appear, but in all Shapleigh censuses from 1800-1840 Alexander Douglass Baker as head of household with numbers of household members consistent with his wife and children (names of household members are not given until the 1850 census) In 1800 Alexander D. Baker is listed in Shapleigh, ME with his wife and 1 young daughter under 5, which would be their firstborn, Sarah C. In 1810 Alexr. D. Baker is in Shapleigh, living close by Sylvanus Roberts, Benjamin Sayward, (recall Julia Sayward was said to have married Samuel Roberts,Jr., son of Samuel and Charity Baker Roberts) and Nathaniel Pillsbury. In 1820 Douglass appears again as Alexr. D. Baker (mistranscribed in index as Alexa, but inspection of the original longhand writing on the census clearly shows the elevated letter at the end of Alex is an r not a). In 1830 he is just a few doors from Ahira,( who is in this census was mispelled as Ira Baker), Alexander D. has 2 adult females 20-30 and one 50-60, as well as himself 60 to 70. In 1840 he is living next door to son, Ahira, spelled correctly.
That Douglass was Alexander Douglass is confirmed by Early Families of Shapleigh and Acton, ME by Frederick R. Boyle, 2002. He did not know, but surmised that he was of the Otis Baker family of Dover, NH, which was correct, Otis being his uncle, his father's brother, as was the first Alexander Douglass Baker. He gives a marriage date different from the Otis and Baker Genealogies of November 24 1797. Have not yet found marriage record. Boyle writes: "the Baker homestead property, acquired in 1804, was in lot 13 of the 2nd range, 3rd division in Shapleigh, formerly owned by Capt. Joshua Trafton."
Alexander D. and Mary (Bagley) Baker are buried with Ahira and Aphia (Bean) in the Baker Cemetery, on the homestead in what is now woods off the road to Ross Corner. (BAKER CEMETERY. In woods, across the road, and directly East from the Baker cellar, on the discontinued road running northward from the Ross Corner Road) Mary, d. Alex D. Baker, d. Mar. 2, 1849, aged 43 yrs. Mary, w. Alex D. Baker, d. Jan. 4, 1848, aged 77. Alex D., d. Apr. 26, 1844, aged 82 yrs.
1800 Shapleigh, ME Alexander D. Baker 0 0 0 1 0 // 1 0 0 1 0
1810 Shapleigh, ME (indexed as Alexdr D. Buker) Alexdr D. Baker 2 0 0 0 1 // 2 1 0 1 0
