Biography

Jane Baker was born 20 Sept 1793 and was the daughter of James Baker and Elisabeth Mongomery (6). She was likely born in North Carolina, possibly Burke County. On 8 Dec 1808, she married William Rice in Wayne County, Kentucky (5). William “Billy” was born in 1784 or 1785 and was the son of Abraham Rice (3). In the 1850 census he listed his birthplace as Tennessee (1), in 1860 as Virginia (2). William Rice may have come from Henry Co, VA, or Sullivan, North Carolina, (became part of Tennessee in 1796). Billy was a Baptist minister at the Bethel Church in Parmleysville. He also farmed (1). Billy and Jane spent their entire lives together in Wayne County (7, 8, 9). They had 5 children together that were living at the time Billy's will was filed in 1860. Surena, who died 10 Mar 1844, may also have been their daughter. Jane died 21 May 1847 in Wayne County Kentucky. For the rest of his life, Billy lived with his daughter Polly and her husband Isaac Lovelace (1, 2). Billy died 15 Nov 1863 near his home at Parmleysville, Wayne County, Kentucky (10). He was murdered by Confederate gorillas. The graves of Billy and Jane are located in Bethel Cemetery. The grave said to be that of Billy Rice is marked with only a field stone. It is the first grave by the gate at the northeast side of the church.
