Notes

Henry Baker was a Texas Ranger for 2 years. He was stationed at Fort Concho in San Angelo, TX, and also Fort Stockton for awhile. Henry was a Ranger when the Civil War started. He enlisted in the Confederate Army for 4 years. At one time Henry received 8 bullet holes in his clothing and his hat. Suffered 3 different wounds, one being a scalp wound. Another bullet took off the top of his right ear. Another struck his foot. He was in the hospital once with a really bad hand. The doctors were talking about taking it off. Henry put his pistol under his pillow, and when the doctors came in he said he did not want his hand removed. The doctors talked rough to him, so he took his gun in his good hand and told them they could not take his hand off. They said he would die. He answered, "If you will give me good care I will live and have two hands, but if you cut my hand of I may die, and if not I will be a cripple." So they left him and he recovered. Henry was a blacksmith and kept a blacksmith shop. He made several trips to California, and lived a while in Washington. He also lived for awhile on the Calaveras River near Valley Spring, CA. beside his brother Josephus who lived and panned gold there and was eventually killed there. Henry did not swear or drink whiskey. He was a member of the Methodist Church and was a Master Mason. Henry was killed by a train a few miles south of Zephyr, TX at age 84.
