Biography

William Baker was baptised in Bratton Fleming on 18 March 1855, son of John and Mary. [1]

In 1861, the family are living at 13, Bratton Down, Bratton Fleming, Barnstaple, Devon, England. The household comprises of the parents John born in Ilfracombe, Devon, England and Mary. Their children Susan, John Thomas and William. John is a Agricultural Labourer by profession. [2]

In 1871, the family are living at Village, Bratton Fleming, Barnstaple, Devon, England. The family comprises John and Mary and their children John, Thomas and William. John is a Farmer of 100 acres, seemingly a big jump up from 1861. They also have a servant called John Trump who is a Farm Servant Labourer, WIlliam is a farming apprentice by profession[3]

In 1881, William is living at Forest, 4, Myrtle Terrace, Bradninch, Tiverton, Devon, England with his sister Susan. Both William and Susan are Elementary Teachers[4]

Emma married in the June quarter of 1881, her surname has been transcribed as Latham or Lathem or Lathen, she married William Baker [5]

On the 1891 census, the family are living at Fore Street, Bradninch, Tiverton, Devon, England. The household comprises of William and Emma, and their children Ethel M, Arthur W, Hubert J, and Ernest L. hey also have a servant named Florence H Elstone. William is a schoolmaster by profession [6]

In 1901, the family are still living at Fore Street, Bradninch, Tiverton, Devon, England. The household comprises of William and Emma and their children Ethel and Ernest. William is a Elementary Schoolmaster and Ethel is a Assistant Teacher In A Board School[7]

By 1911, William and Emma are living at Beecrofts Fore St Bradninch, Bradninch, Devon, England, William is now a Head Master Council School. This census also confirms this couple have been married 29 years and had 5 children, 4 of which are still living.[8]

No death registration has been found for William as there are 5 options (checked 13th of November 2016). It is possible that William's death is the one registered in 1930 in Barnstable and Emma's in the one registered in 1936 in Barnstable, but at last one of the death certificates would need be purchased to be sure of this.
