Biography

Samuel was a Friend (Quaker)

Samuel Baker, a Quaker, was born in County Wexford, Ireland in 1769. He and his family came to Canada on the brig Constantia, Captain William Moyne, 58 days from Wexford, arriving at Quebec on 15 August 1819, then embarked on the Steamboat Malsham on 20 August for passage to Montreal. They settled in Hallowell, Huntingdon, Canada West (present-day Ontario). He died in 1861 and is buried in the Friends Burying Ground, Huntingdon, Ontario.

22 April 1801 Marriage Certificate Samuel Baker and Sarah Waring. Samuel Baker son of William and Ann Baker of Garraphilhum‡ in the County of Wexford, and Sarah Waring daughter of the late Thomas Waring of Killeshin in the Queens County and Abigail his wife, Having declared their intentions of taking each other in marriage before the monthly Meeting of the people called Quakers, of Carlow, the proceedings of the said Samuel Baker and Sarah Waring, after due inquiry and deliberate consideration there of, were allowed by said Meeting, there intentions having been twice published in the Meeting to which they respectfully belong, and they appearing clear of all others, and having consent of parents and Guardians concerned. Now these are to certify all whom it may concern that for the accomplishing of their said marriage, this 22nd day of the 4th month in the year one thousand, eight hundred and one. They the said Samuel Baker and Sarah Waring appeared in public Assembly of the aforesaid People in their public Meeting place in Carlow, and he the said Samuel Baker, taking the said Sarah Waring the hand did openly declare as followeth. In the presence of this Assembly I take Sarah Waring to be my wife promising through Divine Assistance to be unto her a true and faithful husband until Death. And the said Sarah Waring did then and there in the said Assembly declare as follows-In the presence of this Assembly I take Samuel Baker to be my husband promising through Divine assistance to be unto him a true and faithful wife until Death. And the said Samuel Baker and Sarah Waring as a further confirmation thereof did then and there to these present set their names as Husband and Wife. Samuel Baker Sarah Baker Witnesses John Whitton Thomas Baker Sarah O'Brien John Waring Abigail O'Brien Joshua Waring And many more names.
