Biography

William Harvey Baker was born 8 February 1841 (see research note) in North Carolina (see research note) to David Davenport Baker and Mary Baker[1].

Sometime in 1849, William's parents moved to Kentucky[1]. In the 1850 Federal Census, William lived with his parents and siblings in Pulaski County, Kentucky[2]. In 1851, William's parents moved again, this time to Iowa[1]. It is likely that William was counted in his father's household in Columbus City, Louisa, Iowa during the state censuses that were conducted in 1852[3] and 1854[4]. William's grandfather, Martin Alexander Baker, lived next door in 1852[3]. In 1855, William's parents moved yet again, to Leavenworth County, Kansas Territory[1]. In the 1860 Federal Census, William lived with his parents and siblings in Kickapoo Township, Leavenworth County, Kansas Territory[5].

On 3 December 1863, probably in Leavenworth County, Kansas, William married Eliza Jane Goble[6]. Eliza was born 5 April 1843 in Washington County, Iowa to William Harrison Goble and his wife Lydia[6].

In the 1870 Federal Census, William and Eliza lived in Wyandotte County, Kansas, in the household of Eliza's brother Stephen Goble[7]. Also in the household were Stephen's wife, their child Louetta, and the first two children of William and Eliza[7]. William and Stephen worked as farmers while their wives took care of the home[7].

In the 1880 Federal Census, William and Eliza lived in Leavenworth County, Kansas[8]. Also in the household were their first five children, William's brother Martin (a widow), and two of Martin's children[8]. WIlliam and Martin worked as farmers while Eliza took care of the home[8]. William and Eliza continued to live in Leavenworth County, Kansas in 1895[9] and 1900[10].

On 15 April 1908 William's wife Eliza passed away in Childers, Nowata, Oklahoma[6]. William and Eliza had six children together[11]:

  1. Mary Mathilda Baker b. 1864 d. 1959[6]
  2. Francis Baker b. ~1869 d. ?[12][13]
  3. William "Harry" Baker b. ~1875 d. ?[6]
  4. Lillian H. Baker b. 1877 d. 1973[6]
  5. Oscar Baker b. ~1879 d. ?[14]
  6. Lewis Harvey Baker b. 1880 d. 1967[6]

In the 1910 Federal Census, William lived with his youngest son, Lewis, and Lewis' new bride, in Nowata County, Oklahoma[15]. In the 1920 Federal Census, William continued living with his son Lewis, but now in Humboldt County, California[16]. Also in the household were Lewis' wife and four of their children[16].

William was nearly 83 years old when he passed away in his daughter Mary's home[17]. He died on 4 January 1924 in Santa Ana, Orange, California[17][18]. He is buried in Santa Ana Cemetery located in Santa Ana, Orange, California[18].

Research Notes

Birth Date

A birth record for William has not yet been located. William's grave marker indicates that he was born on 8 February 1841[18]. The 1900 Federal Census indicates he was born in February 1841[10]. Estimations of his birth year from other census records are as follows:
Note that when saving this profile a warning will appear because William's birth date is within nine months of the birth date of his sister. Although his sister's grave marker indicates that she was born on 4 August 1840, this author believes that date is not correct, and that she was born closer to 1845.

Birth Location

A birth record for William has not yet been located. Using other sources, there are several possible birth locations for William, but it seems that North Carolina is the best choice. A precise county within North Carolina is uncertain due to the conflict between the 1840 Census and the obituary of William's mother.
These records support North Carolina as his birth location:
  • In the 1840 Census, about a year before William's birth, William's father was counted in Cherokee County, North Carolina[19].
  • The obituary of William's mother, Mary, indicated that she and her husband David "lived continuously in Birk [sic] county, North Carolina, till 1849, when they removed to Kentucky"[1].
  • Multiple census records indicate that he was born in North Carolina[8][9][10][15][16].
Other birth locations were inconsistently indicated in other census records:
  • In the 1850 Federal Census, the first census in which he was listed, William lived with his parents in Kentucky, but the census record indicated that he was born in Tennessee[2].
  • The 1860 Federal Census indicated that William was born in Illinois[5].
  • The 1870 Federal Census indicated that William was born in Iowa[7].
