Biography

No record of the birth of Absalom Baker has been found. He was born in Baltimore County around 1722 and is presumed to be the son of John Baker, based on the following evidence. The Baltimore County Debt Book of 1754 listing who owned property with rent due to Lord Baltimore named John Baker son of Absalom owning two tracts, John's Park & Baker's Industry. Considering the date of this entry, it appears to be for the son of the subject of this profile. The entry next to this one was for Charles Baker son of John. [1] It is possible the assessor writing in the book switched the names and it should have said Absalom Baker son of John. This would mean two sons of John Baker living on plantations located next to each other. A deed dated 6 SEP 1767 shows Absalom Baker conveyed 3 tracts of land for £140 to Vachel Dorsey. The three lots were named Dorsey's Good Will, Baker's Industry & William's Chance. Absalom's wife Mary Baker signed to release her dower rights.[2]

Patent records show that Baker's Industry was originally laid out for 78 acres in 1752 by John Baker.[3] John Baker must have left the land to his son, Absalom, because just 4 years later unclaimed land was added to the original tract and renamed Bakers' Industry Enlarged for 288 acres in the name of Absalom Baker.[4] The amount of land does not match the deed mentioned above, but early land transfers were not always recorded in official sources.

Baker-7488 is incorrectly identified here to be the Revolutionary War veteran noted in the Military section of the Biography. The latter is Absalom Baker, Jr. Baker-45347, son of Absalom Baker or Rowan County, NC who is identified in the 1777 will of his father Absalom Baker. Absalom Baker, Jr. Baker-45347 was married to Mary as noted in various deeds recorded in GA. See Baker-45347 for more extensive info on Absalom Baker, Jr.

Once corrected, a merge should be initiated with Baker-45349 who appears to represent the same Absalom Baker, Sr.
