Disputed Origins

There is no proof that the wife of John Baker was the daughter of John Day and Mirable Fenner, of Norwich, Norfolk, England.

Biography

Birth

Based upon her examination before embarking for New England in 1637, Elizabeth (___), wife of John Baker, grocer, was born in about 1598, most likely in Norwich, Norfolk County, England, where she and her husband were living in 1637.[1]

Marriage

She married John Baker, a grocer, in England by about 1630. They were both aged 39 and they already had at least three children when examined in April 1637.[1] A prior version of the profile, citing only an unsourced online tree, asserted that that this marriage occurred in Mancroft, Norfolk, England, in 1632. No record confirming this has been found, but it is plausible if the baptism records for their children cited below are the correct family.

Emigration

Elizabeth emigrated with her husband John Baker, grocer, on either the John and Dorothy of Ipswich or the Rose of Yarmouth in about April 1637, departing England for Charlestowne, Massachusetts Bay Colony. They were traveling with three children, and four servants:[1]

08 Apr 1637. "The examinaction of John Baker: borne in Norwch in Norffolck Grocar ageed 39 yeres and Elizabeth: his wife ageed 31 yeares with 3 Children Elizabeth. John. and Thomas. and 4 Servants Marey Alxarson: aged 24 yeares Anne Alxarson: aged 20 years Bridgett Boulle: aged 32 yeares and Samuel Arres: aged 14 yeares are all desirous to goe for Charles Towne. in New England ther to inhabitt and Remaine".

They arrived in Charles Town, Massachusetts Bay Colony, on 8 June 1637.[2]

Death

The circumstances of her death are uncertain. A prior version of the profile, citing only an unsourced online tree, asserted that Elizabeth died about 1666 in Ipswich, Essex, Massachusetts Bay Colony.

Hi, im trying to find connections on my family tree from another site I use and this one, and I wanted to know if you think this is the same person as https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/L6J7-HPV making her Elizabeth Woodhouse, born 18 May 1606 in Norwich, Norfolk, England, and immigrated to America in 1637 (Charlestown Essex, MA) It lists her husband as a John Baker (1598-1680) I'm really new to this family tree stuff, but the other website has 3 sources listed that I'm checking out and I'm just looking for help. Anyway, thanks!

I think that's it's meant to be ... but Just because there was an Elizabeth Woodhouse bpt. in 1607 in Kedleston Derbyshire, doesn't mean that she was Elizabeth the mother of Thomas bpt. 1636 in Norfolk. The two locations are about 135 miles apart and would take 45 hours to walk between (no autos). Her maiden name remains unknown. Advice to new genealogist: Don't believe everything you see in family search trees and pedigree files.

Thanks for maintaining this profile; Elizabeth the wife of John Baker is my ancestor. Is there any actual proof her name was Day or Dey? I did see a 1626 marriage record of a John Baker and Elizabeth Day in Horsemondon, Kent about 150 miles from Norwich but that would seem not likely to be the correct couple. Thanks!

There certainly isn't any proof and none of the sources listed mention a surname for Elizabeth. The sources in Anderson's Great Migration Directory don't give her a surname. Torrey's entry gives her no surname either.

Objections to changing her surname to Unknown?
