Biography

Daughter of James and Mary Baker. Married John Wesley Bates about 1852.

Mary is on the 1850 Federal Census with her parents and siblings living in Georgia.^[1]

She is on the 1860 Federal Census with her husband and 4 children living in Polk, Arkansas. The children on this census are Sarah J 5, Nancy 3, Dennis and William both listed as 0. All the children were born in Arkansas.^[2]

On the 1870 Federal Census the children are Sarah J 15, Nancy A 12, Evaline 7, Martha 5, Stephen 3, and Elisa A 0.^[3]

On the 1880 Federal Census the children at home are Evaline 17, Martha 15, Stephen 12 and Eliza 8.^[4]

The 1900 Federal Census has all of the children gone and a grandson William P Hendrix 22 in the house. Mary is listed as having had 10 children 6 of whom were still living.^[5]

Mary died in 1908 and is buried in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Big Fork, Polk County, Arkansas, USA^[6]
