Research Notes

  • Baldwin writes, "MARY...bapt. in Aston Clinton, County Bucks, England, 19 Feb'y, 1625/6, came to Milford, Conn., probably in 1639, with her relatives. She m. Robert Plum, [sic] of Branford and Milford, who d., says Savage, 12 May 1655; but it appears, from New Haven Colonial Records, Vol. 1, p. 15, that his will, dated 25 July, 1655, was proved 17 Dec., 1655, at Milford. the inventory was three hundred pounds, two shillings and five pence. The widow m. 167, as his second wife, Sargeant William East, of Milford, and died 1708, having no children by him."[9]

M Cole and Brad Stauf, please see the full citation from Torrey that I included in this profile. Torrey lists her birth/death as 1625-1708. I own an original copy of Baldwin's genealogy. He lists her baptism as 19 February 1525/6 and death as 1708. So, there are two citations that indicate a 1625 birth (with potential 1626 by Baldwin relevant to Julian/Gregorian calendar) and both cite the death year as 1708. Chester (citation 2) also supports the same baptismal date as Baldwin. Chester has published a fair amount of other Baldwins (the men: Richard up to Sylvester and Henry) in the Register, etc., but not a lot on the women. Actually, very little detail was published about women. I expect one of the England Team would get the original birth or baptismal record to see if the birth year could be cleared up. I hope these comments help. I don't know where FindAGrave got their information, but they are not a strong bastion for sources. I'm irritated with myself that I missed this when I rewrote this biography.

Carole, I suggest that you cite Torrey but do not put a verbatim copy of his work into the body of the biography for two reasons: it does not contribute to the flow of Mary's life story; and it just doesn't feel appropriate. Torrey is simply listing the sources that he used (which may or may not support what he says). It would be better to go directly to each of those sources and cite them yourself after looking at them. Only a suggestion.

Hi Jen, t hank you for your feedback! I know it is disruptive; however, when there is controversy over dates, and uncertainty over sources and information, I believe that the full citation is warranted. I learned this from M Ross on another 'controversial' marriage in the PGM section. I think for this particular profile, disruptive as it is, providing as much information as possible should be acceptable.

Perhaps an option would be to cite the full Torrey reference in an inline citation so it shows up in the sources section where people can read it. That would help the bio but also provide the information

Good solution! That way the info is present, but in the sources instead of in the biography.

Thanks, Carol. There's always a lot to do when rewriting a biography...we're always bound to miss something. That's why collaboration is so wonderful. I was less concerned about the baptism, as Chester gives the exact date (of course original records better). With the death date it was the combination of the year 1708, with the 1 Feb date, and then the conflict with FindAGrave, making me wonder if there are other sources out there. Since we can't use FindAGrave itself as a reliable source, perhaps we would be better to use just 1708, and add the specific date in a research note.

Hi M, I will contact F-A-G later today and suggest the death year be changed given the two sources that concur on 1708. I do not consider FAG to be a reliable source, but do include their citations as people may want to look further. I frequently (and I mean frequently to the point that one profile can take me several hours to complete) suggest revisions to FAG profiles with the hopes that their PMs make the changes. I also provide them with sources, some great and some like this 1708 death issue. Thank you!

Looking over the sources from the GM Directory, it looks like Abbott's, Early Families of Milford may be one of the more reliable sources, and it doesn't seem to be online. If you don't have it, that may be one worth trying to track down.

Okay my last message on this. I did find a source for the full date, (its Torrey's first source) , The Ancestry of Lorenzo Ackley & His Wife Emma Arabella Bosworthttps://archive.org/details/ancestryoflorenz00jaco/page/212/mode/2up

I wanted to double check the year of death. The bio cites the History of Stonington, but provides no page number. The only mention of Mary I could find was as the daughter of Sylvester, giving baptism and m. to Robert Plum of Milford.

FindAGrave gives 1706 as her year of death. Sometimes in correcting for the julian and gregorian calendar changes the years can creep up or down if an adjust number gets readjusted. Does anyone know the page number or a better source for her date of death?

The Baldwin Genealogy (https://archive.org/details/baldwingenealogy00bald/page/50/mode/2up) p. 51 by Charles Candee Baldwin says she died 1708 but doesn't cite a specific source or date.

Savage lists her as marrying Plum(b) but doesn't say anything about her death https://archive.org/details/agenealogicaldi00unkngoog/page/104/mode/2up

Ugh…I guess I’ll have to check all the Torrey sources…maybe it’s in one of those.

Baldwin Genealogy was one of Torrey's so I'm thinking that might be all he had to go by as well.
