MR. WYNN BALDWIN

Killed in Tractor Accident

In tragic circumstances the death occurred at Manilla Hospital yesterday evening of Mr. Wynn Baldwin; of “Lonou, " Somerton Road.

In the vicinity of 3 p.m. yesterday afternoon he met with an accident while working a tractor, ploughing. No one actually saw the accident happen. His daughter, Miss Winsom Baldwin, had been with her father a short time before and had gone away to another part of the paddock. Her attention was attracted by the unusual noise of the tractor. Hurrying to the scene she found her father badly injured. She obtained a truck, put him in it and started for town. When, near, Klori gate the petrol supply in the truck gave out and she had to walk back nearly three miles to "Eloura" and obtain help. Eventually she managed to get her father to the Hospital. It is presumed by the Police that the late Mr. Baldwin, who was 62 years of age, had brought his tractor to a depot in the field for refuelling. The engine of the tractor was running. On the side of the machine was a box containing a generator which was charging some batteries, evidently used, for night lights. It is, evident that Mr. Baldwin reached over to pull a lever that would put the generator in action. In doing so he must have touched the gear lever. Instantly the tractor jumped forward, the main drive wheel knocking him down and crushing his head. The tractor travelled for 20 feet, struck a tree head on and reared up against it. When examined the tractor was five feet up the tree and still in gear. No word of praise is too high for the brave girl who surmounted one difficulty after another in order to get her father to hospital. The funeral took place this afternoon at. 4 p.m., after service in the Church of England.
