When Zalman J. Baldwin was born on April 21, 1828, his father, Charles, was 36 and his mother, Sarah, was 28. He was married three times and had four sons and seven daughters. He died on February 23, 1883, at the age of 54, and was buried in Nevada, Missouri.
Zalman was 32 and living in Scotland, Illinois during the American Civil War. The few years leading up to the war must have been very difficult on him. He lost his first wife Mary in 1857, as well as his second wife Caroline, a daughter and his father in 1860. During that first year of the war he married his third wife and had a son.
Zalman went on to have 8 more children and died at the young age of 54 in Vernon County, Missouri.
