Anna (Baldwin) Bryan was born in Hertfordshire, England.

Birth and Parents

Anne (alias Anna) Baldwin, the only child of Robert Baldwin and Joane Robinson was born say March 1604/5 at Northchurch, Hertfordshire, England. She was in her infancy when her father, Robert Baldwin, evidently died young. It is stated that she was baptized at Northchurch in March 1604/5; however, formal records were not kept at that time.[1][2]

Her father's will was dated 22 March [3 James] 1605 and proved 1 April 1605 by his brother Richard Baldwin, executor of his will. After small bequests to his aunt Lettice Foster, of Tring, and to the poor of St. Leonard's and Cholesbury, he left his estate to his wife "Joane" and daughter Anne. His overseer was his "Brother" (brother-in-law) Richard Salter.[3]

Anne is also mentiond in the wills of her paternal grandmother Alice (Kinge) Baldwin, and Uncle Richard Baldwin. The original will of Alice Baldwin is on file in the record of the Court of Archdeaconry of Bucks which was proved, and was dated on 4 June 1622 "...to Anne, daughter of my son Robert Baldwin, 40 shillings...". In her uncle's will dated 18 February 1632/3 listed as "Richard Baldwin of Dun-Dridge in the Parishe of Aston Clinton. Countie of Bucks" "Yeoman" "to Anne Bryant [sic] daughter of my brother Robert, and to her son Richard Bryant [sic] a freehold tenement in Wendover, and fourty-eight pounds, eight pence in money within three months after my decease".[3][1][2][4] Anne is not listed in the will of her paternal grandfather, Henry Baldwin of Dundridge, as he predeceased Anne's birth on 2 January 1599/1600.[3]

Marriage and Children

Anne married as his first wife, Alexander Bryan (1602-1679), the son of Thomas and Anna (Unknown) Bryan say 1631 at Northchurch, Hertfordshire,[5] and had one child born at Aylesbury, Bucks, England:[1][2]

  1. Richard Bryan (b. 1632, Aylesbury; d. 5 Feb 1694, Milford, CT) m. 1) 1649, Mary Pantry (-1679); m. 2) 15 Jul 1679 at Break Neck, LI, Mary Wilmot (-1685); m. 3) 29 Nov 1685 at Milford, CT, Elizabeth (Powell) Treat.

Migration to the Colonies

Anne, Alexander and their son Richard were among the first settlers of Milford, Connecticut in 1639.[4]

Death and Burial

Anne (Baldwin) Bryan died on 20 February 1651 in her 46th year at Milford, Connecticut Colony.[4]She is buried in Milford Cemetery at Milford, New Haven, Connecticut.[6]

In 1663, two years after Anne's death, Alexander and their son, Richard, sold the bequest of property in Wendover from Richard Baldwin, being "four messuages or tenements," given to Richard by the will of his great uncle, Richard Baldwin for £40 to Edward Baldwin of Beaconsfield." Edward, a London barrister, was cousin to both Anne (Baldwin) Bryan and her son Richard.[4]

Paying attention to details is important. I believe Milford was in the "New Haven Colony" until 1664. Then "Connecticut Colony," then "Province of Connecticut." Under no circumstances should the USA describe any events in the 17th Century. Also, I do not believe New Haven was regarded as a county until 1666.

Thank you for your comments, Don. Place name corrections have been made. Some of these came in with the original data import and are relicts. You can make changes like these yourself when you run into them.

Baldwin-9665 and Baldwin-3359 appear to represent the same person because: These are clearly the same person. Different date of death, but I didn't see a good source for either date.
