Temperance Baldwin, the daughter of Richard Baldwin (1622 - 1665) and Elizabeth (Alsop) (Baldwin) Fowler (1625 - 1688), was born about 1651 presumably in Milford, New Haven Colony. She was baptized by Rev. Peter Prudden in First Congregational Society, Milford, on 29 Jun 1651.[1][2].
Temperance Baldwin married Nathan Burwell at Milford. He was the son of John and Alice (Heath) Burwell, born probably in Milford, New Haven Colony about 1646,[3] and he died after September 1714. Nathan Burwell was certainly living and in Milford on 23 Oct 1714 when he personally appeared before the JP there to sign a deed. It is "possible" that he then joined relatives in New Jersey, though this seems unlikely.See Connecticut, New Haven, Milford, Land Records: 05:107, 1714, 03 Sep, Nathan Burwell of Milford to loving cousin Barnabas Baldwin, consideration of good will, undivided rights in the "Two Bitts Purchase".
In January 1686/7 Nathan and Temperance Burwell were given land in Milford by her mother as part of her inheritance.[4]
Their children include:
A number of unsourced and doubtful claims have been advanced in various compilations such as public trees on Ancestry and on Find-A-Grave. Some of them have been previously asserted in this profile.
On 14 Jan 1673/4 [?] It is not clear in the accessible sources if this was in 1672/3 or 73/4, but, given the baptism of first known child Alice at Milford 27 Nov 1674, it seems likely the marriage was in Jan 1673/4.
On 11 Jan 1686 Temperance second married John Fowler. This is certainly incorrect, as her "first" husband was living at least as late as 1714. The given date of this (fictitious) marriage is actually the date on the deed gifting land from her mother to Nathan and Temperance Burwell, so this claim appears likely to have originated in a careless reading of the deed record cited here.
Burial: Fairmount Cemetery, Newark, Essex, New Jersey. Plot: Buried in the Old Newark Burying Ground -- remains (if any left) were re-interred in this cemetery in the early 1800's.[5]
No basis for this claim can be discovered, other than an unsourced and probably misplaced assertion that Temperance "removed to New Jersey" in the Baldwin family section of Families of Old Milford. Two of Nathan's brothers were founding settlers of Newark, but no evidence has been found in New Jersey records that the Nathan Burwell family ever went there. It is suggested that this supposed burial not be credited unless some early direct evidence for it can be found and cited.

Evidence that I have collected shows that Nathan Burwell was still living as late as 1714, and personally appeared before JP in Milford multiple times in the early 1700s.
And, I see no evidence for the construction that Temperance (Baldwin) Burwell m. 2nd, anyone.
And, I can find no evidence underlying the cited Find-A-Grave memorials for Temperance or Nathan, and, in the latter case, I believe the memorial to be fiction. I can't rule out the possibility that Nathan and Temperance went to New Jersey for a time, nor the possibility that Temperance died there. It does seem plausible that she d. prior to 1701, as there is no mention of her in deeds Nathan executed then, nor in 1712, nor in 1714. But there is quite a lot of material on the early years in Newark with several mentions of Nathan's two brothers, but none of Nathan. So, I doubt this, too.
For those point, please see details with citations and discussion on the profile of Nathan with my recent edits.
Also, minor point, there are several places where this profile seems to include text mistakenly left after edits.
I propose to edit this profile, adding a few details and citations and moving the supposed second marriage and supposed burial to a "Doubtful" section.
I will hold off for a time to allow for any discussion / new citations / etc.
