Henry Baldwin was born before, and christened on, 4 October 1769 in Chipping Barnett, London, England[1], the son of Henry Baldwin and Sarah Paige and the brother of Harriett Baldwin.
Henry was a Convict who was tried and convicted in Warwickshire on 3 April 1789 for burning haystacks in protest of land enclosures and was senteced to 7 years "beyond the seas". He arrived in New South Wales aboard the "Admiral Barrington" 16 October 1791[2]. His occupation was that of Yoeman.
Less than seven years after his arrival, he bought Mulgrave Place on 1 May 1797, and by 1800 he was already prospering as a landowner having cultivated 15 acres of wheat, had 5 acres ready for maize to be sown, and he owned 12 hogs. He was a self sufficient proprietor with a woman living with him for whom he was providing. In other words, he did not need to live from government supplies[2].
It isn't clear who the woman mentioned above was, but was in a relationship with Elizabeth (Carpenter) Rayner/Rainer from about 1803 at Freemans Reach, as on 30 May 1804 William Bawldwin was born at Wilberforce, New South Wales, Australia and Elizabeth Rainer is mentioned as the mother at his christening. Henry and Elizabeth never married as she couldn't divorce her husband, Isaac Rayner.
Their children were Willow Baldwin, Edwin Baldwin, Job Baldwin, Eve (Baldwin) Phillips, Otto Baldwin, Wynn Baldwin, Arletta (Baldwin) Evans, Harvest Baldwin, Tulip (Baldwin) Maskey, Virgo Baldwin, Bemarr Baldwin, Dio Wynne Dido Baldwin and Bona Baldwin. Their children's names were taken from a history book because Henry didn't want his children to have Isaac's names as Elizabeth stillwas legally married to Isaac. [3].
Henry died on 6 June 1843 in Wilberforce, New South Wales, Australia but there is no record of Henrys death on the NSW BDM. [4]. He instructed in his will that his body was 'to be intered (sic) in the vault already built on my estate'. The vault is thought to have been on gravel highland on Portion 96, Parish of Wilberforce, near Hibbert's Lane. [5]
The Sydney Morning Herald reported on 14 June 1843: 'On Wednesday the 7th instant Mr. Henry Baldwin of Freeman's Reach, died at the advanced age of seventy-five years. Mr. Baldwin has been long a resident in this district and might be laudably mentioned as a great benefactor to the Hawkesbury Benevolent Institution, having lately given the handsome donation of £100 pounds towards its support besides being an annual subscriber. His funeral took place on Friday on his own property, where he was buried in a vault, previously erected for his wife, and to which he was followed by a numerous and respectable body of his friends. The service was read by Dr Bell.' [6]
Transported in 1791 fleet for 7 years. Granted 100 acres at Wilberforce and did well in wheat farming in the infant colony.
