Research Notes

  • Sir John Baldwin, MP Kt is NOT the father of this Richard Baldwin; they are likely cousins or uncle/nephew.
  • Joseph Lemuel Chester in his Investigative publication, states There is no apparent reason why the John Baldwin named in Inquisition post mortem of Richard Baldwin in 1485 as his brother and heir, may not have been the father of Richard and John and further states The recurrence of the same christian names is suggestive, and as this John was born in 1469, he may reasonably have been the father of sons dying in 1553 Richard of Dundridge) and 1565 (John of the Hayle)

This Richard is described from "Donrigge" (Dundridge), in the parish of Aston Clinton, co., Bucks, yeoman, made his will 16 January 1552-3.

Abstract of the will of Richard Baldwin

To be buried in the church-yard of Aston Clinton;

to Ellyn my wife and Henry my son the rents of my said houses & lands towards bringing up my children;
to Heughe Baldwin, my brothers son, £6. 13`4`;
smalll bequests to godchildren, tenants & servants;
Henry my son 10 silver spoons and a maser;
the residue of all personalty to Ellyn my wife and Henry my son equally, & they to be my executors; :overseers of my will, my brothers John Baldwyn & John Apuke

Note: Heughe Baldwyn, "my brothers son", Nephew: Hugh Baldwin (son of his brother John Baldwin), is appointed Overseer along with John Apuke (his brother-n-law). Richard appoints his wife Ellen, and son Henry, Executors of his will which was proved in the court of the Archdeaconry of Bucks County 21 Feb, 1553.

Richard Baldwin, married Ellyn or Ellen Apuke, most likely the sister of John Apuke, mentioned in the will of Richard in 1552-3, and referred to as "my brother", in which he names Henry Baldwin and John Apuke, overseers of his will.

The original will of Ellen (Apuke) Baldwin, is among the records of the Court of Archdeaconry of Bucks, but the probate act is missing, according to Joseph Chester; therefore, impossible to determine when it was proved, to determine approximate date of her death. Estimated to have been between the 24th of November thru the 24th of October,1566.

In both the will of Richard Baldwin and that of his wife Ellen Apuke, they describe themselves as of "Dundridge". The descent of that manor or "reputed manor", according to Joseph Chester, as follows:

The Manor of "Donrigge" Dundridge

As early as 1320, the manor was in the possession of the Montacutes; it desended to Margaret, Countess of Salisbury, who was beheaded in 1541, when under her attainder, it fell to the crown.

Shortly after, King Henry, VIII, bestowed it upon Sir John Baldwin, the Chief Justice, who held it at his death, 24 Oct, 1545, when with other estate, it passed to his heirs, who were as stated in the inquisition post mortem, Thomas Pakington, son and heir of his daughter Agnes, and John Burlacy, son and heir of his daughter Petronilla.

In the subsequent division of the estate, Dundridge appears to have fallen in the sole possession of the Pakingtons, passing from Thomas Pakington, heir, to his son and heir, John Pakington, who on the 1st of March, 1577-8, according to Patent Roll, 20 Eliz., Part 5, alienated it, with other messuages, tenements, &c., in Aston Clinton, Chesham, and Wendover, co., Bucks, to "Henry and Richard Baldwin," and it was they of course who paid the taxes upon it the following year, wrongly stated elsewhere, to have been paid by "Sylvester Baldwin, & his son Henry."

As Joseph Chester states in his book, "Richard Baldwin, in his will, in 1552/3, described himself as of Dundridge, he could only have been the tenant of the manor, as the ownership did not pass from the Pakingtons until 1577-8."

I also found information in Charles Baldwins " Baldwin Genealogy from 1500-1881, that suggests the "Richard Baldwin and John Baldwin the younger" mentioned in William Dormers will (father of Agnes Dormer) were children of Sir John but died young. The Richard that married Ellen Apuke is not the son of Sir John Baldwin. In fact, Sir Johns daughters and their children (Thomas Packington and John Burlacy) inherited Johns estates. The author also suggests that this Richard died in 1552, and his brother John alive in 1552 were nephews of Sir John, not his children.

Although John Baldwin and Augusta Dormer were shown as Richard's parents by Charles Candee Baldwin in his Baldwin Genealogy, there apparently is information that CCBaldwin was wrong and that Richard's father was Thomas Baldwin the son of John "of the Hayle". Does anyone have source material or recent research regarding Richard?
