Biography

Levi was born in 1867, the son of Sherman Baldwin and Lois Brooks.

Levi was born on October 15, 1867 in Canada West, two years before birth registration began in Ontario. His date of birth is taken from the 1901 Census, and confirmed from his headstone.

He married Sarah Catherine Hare in 1885. Their marriage record reads as follows:

Levi Baldwin, 21, residing in Augusta, born in Canada, bachelor, farmer, son of Sherman Baldwin and Lois Baldwin, married

Sarah Catherine Hare, 21, residing in Wolford, born in Canada, spinster, daughter of Richard Hare and Eliza Hare,

On August 22, 1885, in Bracebridge, Muskoka District, Ontario.

Together they had the following children:

1. Cassie A., son, born March 21, 1886
2. Thomas Leslie, born January 23, 1888
3. Archibald Melvin, born April 18, 1891

Levi died in Saskatchewan in 1941. Sarah predeceased him in 1939.

He and Sarah Catherine were buried at Cabri Community Cemetery, in Cabri, Swift Current, Saskatchewan.

His obituary states that in 1909, Levi and Catherine purchased land south of Shackleton, Saskatchewan using South African Scrip - this was for Veterans from Canada who had served as soldiers or nurses in the Boer War in South Africa (1899 - 1902) were eligible for land scrip entitling them to 320 acres without fees provided they complied with the homestead regulations.

He was survived by three sisters, Mrs. Giffin, of Jasper, Ontario; Mrs. Rathwell, of Picton, Ontario; and Mrs. Tink, of Alonsa, Manitoba. He was also survived by his two sons, Thomas and Archie.
