Biography

'John Baldwin, son of William Baldwin and his wife Mary was born in England the 28 th of October 1712.[1] According to the History of Chester County, his parents emigrated to Pennsylvania in 1713, settling in Bucks County. His father died in 1720 and his mother remarried and moved the family to Chester County, PA. John served an apprenticeship. In 1734, he was a member of the Kennett Meeting, Chester County, Pa, and married Elizabeth Pusey, dau. of William and Elizabeth (Bowater) Pusey, of London Grove, Chester County, Pa.[1]

He was a faithful Quaker leader and traveled to Maryland and Virginia to visit other meetings. John and Elizabeth were the parents of Mary, Lydia, William, Samuel, Thomas, and Hannah. [2] John came down with smallpox in November, 1746 and died within a few days, on December 1, 1746 (this date is reported as October in some records due to misunderstanding of Quaker calendar months). He is buried in Hockessin, New Castle (now Delaware County) county.[1] [3]
