Eleanor was an activist for the higher education of women.
She married Henry Sidgwick in 1876.
She was one of the first students and Newnham College, Cambridge. She became Vice-Principal of Newnham in 1880 and succeeded as principal in 1892 after the death of Principal Anne Clough.
Sidgwick was elected President of the Society for Psychical Research in 1908 and named 'president of honour' in 1932.
