Biography

This profile is part of the Ball Name Study.

Jacob Ball was born to Richard Ball and Susanna (Stone) Ball in South Pool, Devon, England. He was baptised in South Pool on 12 July 1795. [1] Jacob worked as an agricultural labourer throughout his life. On Christmas Day 1818 he married Jane Distin, [2] also from South Pool, and the couple had nine children: John, Jacob, William, Elizabeth, Harriet, James, Samuel, Joseph, and Ann.

Jacob and Jane were enumerated at Wester Coombe in South Pool on the 1841 census, [3] and the family were still living there on the 1851 census, [4] although only Jacob and his youngest daughter, Ann, were there. Jane and the youngest boy, Joseph, were off visiting Jane's sister Elenor (Distin) Webber in Tormoham, Torquay. [5]

Jacob died in 1856, aged 61 [6] and was buried in South Pool on 11 January 1856. [7] His wife, who died in 1867, is buried with him.
