Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Mary (Smith) Lee was a Virginia colonist.

Mary Smith was born in circa 1725 in Charles County, Colony of Maryland. She was the daughter of Mary Matthews (1695–1760) and Philip Smith (1695–1743).

Her first marriage was to a Jesse Ball (1716-1747).[1] They were married on 14-Feb-1740 in Northumberland Virginia. Jesse Ball was from Lancaster County, Colony of Virginia.

After the death of Jesse Ball; Mary married Colonel John Corbin Lee in Lancaster, Colony of Virginia, on December 20, 1749,[2] when he was 25 years old.

She died circa in 1802 in Cabin Point, Westmoreland County, Virginia.

Research Notes

This Mary is often confused with a Mary Ball who was born on September 19, 1750, in Westmoreland, Colony of Virginia. She was the daughter of William and Laetitia Ball. This Mary Ball may have also married a John Lee and after his death she then married Reginald Graham on April 3, 1774, in Colony of Virginia. Mary died on October 10, 1804, in Fauquier County, Virginia, at the age of 54.

Here is the will of Mary (Smith) Ball-Lee-Smith (3rd married Maj. John Smith after John Lee died per the folks who manage Geo. Washington papers at National Archives http://financial.gwpapers.org/?q=content/smith-mary-smith-ball-lee). Mary mentioned no children or grandchildren of her own, and bequeathed her estate to her surviving sister Susannah (Smith) Lee, of Essex Co., and Susannah's children/orphaned grandchildren. All the remainder, including money, was to go to her named executor, Susannah's son Baldwin M. Lee. That will is here: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-99PX-FGSG?i=423&cat=399056 Westmoreland Co. Deeds & Wills Book 20, p. 418.

As a member of the US Black Heritage Project, I have added a information on the slaves owned by Mary with categories using the standards of the US Black Heritage Exchange Program. This helps us connect enslaved ancestors to their descendants. See the Heritage Exchange Portal for more information.
Hi Elaine, their wills name many more (in my above comment). His will is also on his profile in comments. Per this chancery suit, those in her possession ended up with one Thomas Rowand. https://www.lva.virginia.gov/chancery/full_case_detail.asp?CFN=193-1803-008#img

Ball-5229 and Ball-4123 appear to represent the same person because: same husband, neither profile has sources to support dates, dates are just a guess
