Cynthia Ball was born around 17 November 1778, at Newfane, Republic of Vermont. [1] Her death has been estimated @ after 04 September 1850 (last known census for her). [2] According to different user-submitted sources, she was the daughter of Samuel H Ball (abt 1742-abt 1831) and Phebe Taylor (abt 1740-abt 1814). Samuel and Phebe had at least 12 children. A 13th child, Sarah, is mentioned in Familysearch.org genealogies, but no information was located for her. [3]
Cynthia married Adonijah Gleason (abt 1779-aft Sept 1850) on 02 April 1799, at New Marlborough, Windham, Vermont, United States. [4] The marriage ended after 04 September 1850 (last census for both).
According to one source, after their marriage they settled in Sempronius, Cayuga, New York, then moved to Switzerland, Indiana, then moved to Minnesota Territory. [5]
However, the documents found in Minnesota are not necessarily directly related to the Cynthia Ball and Adonijah Gleason who appear in the 1850 Census at Jefferson, Switzerland, Indiana, at the ages of 72 and 71, respectively. In this census, they are in the household of Adonijah Gleason, 42 yrs, probably their son, who may have been a widower (his wife is not named) and who had four young children. A second Adonijah Gleason, born in 1808 like the first Adonijah in the 1850 Indiana census, was located in Minnesota in 1857, [6] but with a wife Elizabeth and six children, four born in Indiana, two in Ohio, and he himself in Indiana. While the 1850 Indiana census Adonijah, born in New York, may very well have remarried, the children's names and ages in Minnesota in no way correspond to those listed in 1850 in Indiana, and given their ages in 1850, it is peculiar that none of the children from the 1850 census were still in his household seven years later. As well, an Asa and Mary Gleason, well into their 60's, also appear in Minnesota, perhaps this second Adonijah's parents. The New York born Adonijah's parents were Simon Gleason and Charity Bellows, [7] i.e., the Adonijah who appears in Minnesota in 1857 does not seem to be the Adonijah Gleason in Indiana in 1850, even though they have the same birth year and unusual first name. A John Gleason was also located in later Minnesota censuses, with a daughter Cynthia born in 1867, married to an Emmilie White. [8] Born in New York, he was possibly a son or grandson who named his daughter after his mother/grandmother, but no evidence links him directly to Cynthia Ball. Neither Cynthia nor her husband appear in censuses after 1850 in Vermont, New York, Indiana or Minnesota.
Adonijah and Cynthia probably had children. As mentioned above, the couple appeared in the 1850 census in Indiana, with a 42 yr old Adonijah, born around 1808 in New York. Another likely son was located in a marriage certificate in Indiana in 1886, a Berzelin Gleason, whose parents are listed as Cynthia Ball and Adonijah Gleason. He was 72 at the time, born in New York, meaning that he was born around 1814. [9]
