Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Richard Ball was a Maryland colonist.

Richard was born about 1639/40 probably in England, son of William Ball and (probably) Hannah (possibly) Atherold[1].

That he was son of William Ball is confirmed in his own probate records: ""Let noe ad'ion [administration] be granted to any p'son or p'sons of the goods & chattells of Richard Ball, gent: Late of Petapsco in Baltimore county, dec'd, till William Ball, his father, dwelling at Rapahanock, in Virginia be first heard..."[2]

He and (his father) William Ball were granted land in Maryland in 1659 with a group of other men known to have been from Lancaster Co., Virginia. He settled in Patapsco, Maryland.

He married by March 1662 Mrs Mary Humphreys, probably widow of Thomas Humpreys. Mary brought a daughter into the marriage, and also had a daughter with Richard, named Hannah Ball. Mary (_____) (Humphreys) Ball died between 1667 and 1677 (year her husband died).

He died intestate in 1677 in Baltimore County, Maryland. His probate records indicate he had only one child-- at least who survived him-- namely, Hannah.[3]

His only child, Hannah Ball, married by 1681 Thomas Everett of Baltimore Co. (who by the way was a witness of Col. William Ball's 1680 will).

WARNING: There are many family trees that claim male descendancy from this Richard; however, this Richard had no sons. Please beware of such claims.

Warning: there were at least three Richard Balls of the same approximate age that should remain distinct from each other:

1. Richard Ball-511 b abt 1640 son of William of Millenbeck and who settled in Patapsco, MD, married Mary; one daughter; died before his father, hence not named in William's will.

2. Richard Ball-597 b abt 1646 son of Alling Ball and Dorothy Fugil. No further info.

3. Richard Ball-2723 b abt 1645 son of William Ball (supposed son of Richard Ball DD) and Joane King; brother of Alling Ball; d 1684 in Norfolk Co., VA; married Elizabeth Linton. Larry Chesebro' is working on this one.

Please do NOT merge them. Thanks.
