Biography

Amanda J. Ball was born in Penn. Dec. 14, 1844. Her early life was spent in the state of Ohio. She was married to Richard K. Shepherd, Feb. 20, 1866, at Perry, Ohio. Mr. and Mrs. Shepherd came to Cedar County, Iowa, in 1870, choosing Center Township as their place of residence. With the exception of five years spent in Missouri, this county has been their home since they first came to Iowa. For over 20 years they lived on a farm about six miles from this place. The last 17 years they have been residents of Tipton. About two weeks ago Mrs. Shepherd suffered a paralytic stroke. For a time there were favorable symptoms of recovery, but last Saturday the messenger of death came, and she went away from us. Mrs. Shepherd was the mother of two children, who survive her. They are William W. Shepherd of South Dakota, and Mrs. Dora E. Smith of West Liberty, Iowa. She is also survived by her husband, by one sister, Mrs. Emma Russell of Wyoming, by five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Mrs. Shepherd's religious beliefs were those taught by the Methodist Episcopal Church, with which she affiliated as a member for a number of years. She was a woman of sympathetic and helpful nature, and had a well deserved reputation for responding to appeals for friendship and substantial comfort. She will be greatly missed by the friends whom her worth brought to her, and in the family circle where she was so dearly loved. Funeral services were conducted in the Methodist Episcopal church by the pastor, Rev. W.E. Van Buren. Interment was made in the Masonic Cemetery.
