"William D. "Duke" Ball Evansville, IN

William D. "Duke" Ball, 93, passed away peacefully in his home Thursday, January 14, 2016. He was a father, brother, uncle, grandfather, great grandfather, business leader, community supporter, active in civic, family, and spiritual life. All these things describe Duke Ball. Duke was born in Montgomery City, Missouri on April 26th 1922 the son of the late H.E. and Jessie (Suggett) Ball. Duke graduated from Montgomery City High School. He enrolled in Central College in Fayette, MO. He was called to World War II and served in the Navy from 1943 -1946. After the war he served as an Ensign aboard the Battleship USS Missouri. Returning to college after the war, Duke graduated from the University of Missouri with a degree in Business and Public Administration. He later attended the University of Wisconsin and Northwestern University to further his banking education. Marriage to the former Jane Shibley followed in 1949. At this time Duke was a National Bank Examiner. In 1957 Duke joined National City Bank as the bank's auditor. Following early retirement as President of Real Estate, Duke joined Black Beauty Coal Company as Director of Real Estate and served on the company's board of directors for ten years. Service to his profession included active membership on the National Association of Bank Auditors and the Indiana Bankers Mortgage Banking Committee. He was also President and co-owner of Executrav Travel Agency from 1981-1994. Duke was a charter member of American Baptist East (formerly Eastern Heights Baptist Church). He was a choir member for 43 years, served in all church offices, and also served 23 years as a church trustee.

Duke's community involvement was extensive and included service with the Evansville Council of Churches, Chamber of Commerce, Evansville Industrial Foundation, served as member, secretary, and treasurer of the Salvation Army Board, Breakfast Optimist Club, Board of Directors of Welborn Baptist Hospital, and member, President and President Emeritus of the Evansville Freedom Festival. Personal activities were highlighted by more than 50 years as a Mason in the Reed Lodge #316 F&AM, Evansville Consistory Scottish Rite, and Hadi Temple Shrine where he enjoyed playing the trombone in the Shrine Band. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Music fraternity. Duke was instrumental in forming the annual Jingle Bones Christmas program consisting of an all trombone band performing Christmas Music.

Service to youth through the Boy Scouts of America Buffalo Trace Council spanned many years. He served as Assistant Cubmaster, Assistant Scoutmaster, District Committee Member, District Commissioner, Philmont expedition leader for 1967, 1972, and 1974, Assistant Scoutmaster for the 1969 National Jamboree Troop, Executive Board Member, Council Commissioner, and Council President in 1984 - 1986. Duke received the Silver beaver award in 1970.

Duke is survived by his wife Jane of 66 years; his brother, H.E. Ball Jr., also his sons, Richard (Deborah) and Michael (Cindi); his grandson, Chris (Brooke); his great grandson, Evan, and Grandson, Matthew (Bri); also a nephew Robert (Colleen) and his family.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 am, Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at American Baptist East Church, 6300 Washington Ave., Evansville with Pastor Peck Axton and Pastor Jeff Stratton officiating. Burial will be in Park Lawn Cemetery. Friends may visit from 3 pm until 7 pm, Monday, January 18, 2016 at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel-Family Tradition Funeral Home, 5330 Washington Ave., Evansville and again from 10 am until time of service at 11 am, Tuesday at the church.

Contributions may be directed to the Boy Scouts of America Buffalo Trace Council Endowment Fund in memory of Duke Ball, 3501 E. Lloyd Expressway, Evansville, IN 47715.
