Biography

Jeremiah Ballard was born March 29, 1697 at Andover, Massachusetts.

Jeremiah Ballard sold the old family place at Andover in 1735, to his brother-in-law Joseph Gibson and moved to Lunenburg, then to Lancaster, then to Concord, where he was living in 1743. At the outbreak of the war with France in 1744, he entered the military service, serving first as sergeant and then as Captain. In 1745 he was in command of a company engaged in protecting the frontiers of Maine, and his manuscript orders signed by Governor Shirley are still in existence. In 1749 he moved west to New Salem, Massachusetts, at the foot of the Berkshires.

He became one of the most prominent settlers of that town. In 1738 he was Captain in Colonel Joseph William's Regiment. In 1750, Jeremiah Ballard and Jeremiah Meacham were granted a license to erect a sawmill upon the land belonging to them. This mill was built in the east part of the township, upon the middle branch of Swift River, near the locality called Buffalo. Many papers relating to his activities are on file.

Jeremiah Ballard Sr. was one of the first settlers in Lunenburg in about 1735. Mrs. Ballard was received to the church of Lunenburg from Andover church Dec. 7, 1735 and he on OCt. 3, 1736. In his will dated Oct. 1759, proved Sept. 8, 1761, he mentions his wife, Mary, sons Jeremiah, Daniel, Joshua, and Joseph, daughter Mary, with other daughters not named.

Re merge with 2780:

Rebekah (no maiden name given) is listed as the mother of Jeremiah Ballard, (see ref in bio). At least we know is wasn't Elizabeth Phelps.  :)
