"Our family never shoots birds," my father James Robert Ballew often told us about this rule his father Wesley Johnson Ballew had about birds. Wesley Johnson Ballew was a Baptist preacher and a farmer in Georgia. Although shooting birds was a favorite pastime at that time in Georgia, he never let anyone shoot birds on his property. When the boll weevil came in the 1920's and ruined everyone's cotton crops, the birds on his property feasted on the boll weevils, and his cotton crop suffered less damage.
