James was born May 9, 1739 in Reading, Massachusetts. His parents were Raham Bancroft and Ruth Kendall. ^{[1] [2] [3]}

James is a Descendant of Deacon William Locke of Woburn

He died May 17, 1831 there, at 92 years, ^{[1] [2]} "gathered to his fathers as a shock of corn in its season."

Captain James Bancroft served with 11th Massachusetts Bay Provincial Regiment (1775), Continental Army during the American Revolution.

He was a Lieutenant in Capt. John Rowe's company of Minutemen, Col. Ebenezer Bridge's 11th Massachusetts Bay Provincial Regiment, which marched on the alarm of April 19, 1775.He commanded a company at the battle of Bunker Hill, and was many years in the army of the Revolution, serving as a Capt. ^{[4] [5] [6]}

He married Sarah Parsons [Pierson?] about May 11, 1758 in Reading, ^{[1] [2] [7]} and together they had eight children in 20 years: ^[8]
