Biography

Wilfred was born on 23 Oct 1902 and baptised at Southwick, Durham, ENG on 19 Nov 1902. Wilfred Bancroft was the son of Frank Bancroft (an Engineer) and Harriet, nee Schofield.

It appears he arrived in Victoria as a 10 year old, in company of a younger brother (Master Raymond, 5 months) and sister (Miss Mary, 7) and his mother (34), on the Aberdeen liner "Norseman" from London, arriving in Melbourne on 27 Feb 1913. His father was not on that ship and may have arrived earlier.

At time of marriage in 1927 he was a grocer, living at Lewis St, Coburg. In the 1928 and 1931 Electoral Roll (and 1929 Sands Directory) he and Queenie are living at 14 Kerford St, Coburg. In 1934 and 1937 they are living at the 1 Lord Weaver Gr., Bonbeach.

In 1938, he was at 432 Point Nepean Rd, Chelsea, VIC when he was declared bankrupt.^[1] This is the last time he seems to have worked as a grocer.

The 1942 Sands Directory has him living at 33 Kendall St, Coburg. In the 1949 Electoral Roll he is still at 33 Kendall St and his occupation is textile worker. By the 1954 Electoral Roll they are at 433 Reynard St, Coburg West and his occupation is clerk. By 1958 they are at 9 Dromana Ave, Pascoe Vale. In 1963 Queenie is recorded at 10 Northumberland Rd, Pascoe Vale and Wilfred is at 2 COD, Army Camp, Broadmeadows as a clerk. He is at 93 Snell Ave, Glenroy (apparently alone) in 1967, but they are both listed at 11 William St, Glenroy in 1968. He is still listed as a clerk.

In the 1972 Electoral Roll he is recorded (alone) at 20 Marvin Ave, Rye. It seems he had retired by this time.

He passed away in 1974.
