Biography

Joseph was born in 1839. Joseph Bandy ... He passed away in 1911.

Captain Joseph Bandy enlisted in the Army of Tennessee at the outset of the War for Southern Independence, and was assigned to Company A, 9th Infantry Regiment. Three days later he was promoted to corporal, and one week later to 1st sergeant. After Chicamauga, he was elected 1st lieutenant. And three months before wars end to captain. For three hours he was acting colonel in command of the regiment, until relieved by the permanent commander. Although he served as an officer for most of the war, he never upgraded his uniform continuing to ware the privates uniform he was issued. After war's end, at the behest of friends, he borrowed the tunic he is pictured in only for the photograph.

At this point, I will note that internet sources have begun, and circulated a story that Captain Bandy ran away from home at age 16 to join the Confederate Army. Since it IS a proven fact that he was born in 1839; he was 16 in 1855. Six years before the beginning of the Confederate Army. [1]
