Cornelius, as a child, emigrated with the rest of his family in late 1658 or early 1659 from Harlingen, Friesland, Netherlands on the ship De Trouw, arriving in New Amsterdam on the 12 Feb 1659. He married his first wife, Jannetje Du Pre, around 1680 in New Utrecht (Brooklyn). It is uncertain where he resided when he first removed to the vicinity of Hackensack, as many deeds in those early times were never recorded. That part of present-day Bergen county, west of the Hackensack River belonged to Essex county prior to 1709, and the first book of deeds of Essex Co. covering that period is missing. It is probable that he owned land on the east side of the river, opposite Hackensack, at what is now known as Bogota, as well as land west of the river, as between 1682 and 1687 Cornelius and his associates purchased 2,260 acres of land from Sarah Kiersted, including Bogota, Bergen, NJ. One of these associates is believed to have been John Cornelius Bogert. The future would find that the Banta family owned most of Bogota south of Fort Lee Road while the Bogert family would own all of Bogota north of Fort Lee Road. In 1695, Cornelius, with his three brothers and six other men, bought a large tract of land running from Overpeck creek to the Hudson river, and more than two miles in breadth from north to south. It comprised about 3,000 acres, for which the sum of 100 pounds was paid. It included within its bounds a large portion of the present townships of Englewood and Palisade. On the 3 Dec 1702 Cornelius bought of Richard Pope 240 acres of land on the west side of the Hackensack river, extending to Wynesksack brook and adjoining on the north a similar tract which had been bought by his father in 1686, and was his by inheritance. This tract of land of 240 acres was deeded to his oldest son, Epke, by endorsement on the deed dated the 3 Sep 1711. Cornelius' will was dated the 13 Apr 1719. An abstract of the will is included here: "1719 April 13. Banta, Cornelius Epke, of Hackinsack, Bergen Co., yeoman; will of. Wife Ablech (usually written Abeltie - third wife), sons Egbert, Jacob and Abraham, daughters, Rachel, Leah and Elizabeth. Eldest son Egbert to have sword as a preference or birthright. Half of cattle and moveable household goods to children of first wife, and half to children of second wife “excepting ye two spinning wheels and churn and milk tubs, shall remaine unto my three daughters, Rachel, Leah and Elizabeth, to be divided equally between them.” Real and personal estate. Executors - brothers-in-law David Desmaret, junior, and Samuel Desmaret, junior. Witnesses – Roulof Bogart, Elizabeth Bonguert, Richard Edsall." On the 22 Apr 1719 an inventory was taken "of the personal estate, £148.1.6, incl. a negro wench and child, £40." The will was probated on the 20 Jun 1719 and has been preserved in the office of the Secretary of State in Trenton, NJ. Cornelius was buried at the Church On the Green in Hackensack, Bergen, NJ.
P. 99 Conquest of Continent by Banta
It was becoming the custom of other Dutch families to adopt a surname based on where they had come from or what they had done as a trade in the old world. With the new generation, the boys decided that chaning the fmaily name each generation by adding "son" to the father's name was confusing and old fashioned. Recalling from the stories that Epke told them each night as children that his father had signed his name "Jacob Epkese te Bonte" after his wif'es property at Bonte they decided to take that name. However, the Dutch were very careless in writing; and with the boys bing unable to write, they had to depend on Epke for the spelling. Though they pronounced their name Bonte, he told them the proper spelling of it was Banta. The souther provinces of Holland always put "van" meaning from, in front of the town or are name. Thus, if a family was from the town of Burren, they would take the name van Buren. This was not the custom of those families from the northern province of Friesland so the Bantas did not put "van" in front of the area from which they had come. Jannettie was christened Jannettie Banta and was the first bo be baptized with the Banta surname as a maiden name. From this point on, the families of the five boys bore the name Banta as a surname.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Cornelius by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Cornelius:
Epke-16 and Banta-1405 appear to represent the same person because: Propose merge between Banta-1405 and Epke-16. Both are the same person for following reasons:
(1) DOB is only 1 yr difference, but place of birth is identical; (2) DOD is before Oct 1722 (Banta-1404) and place of death is same; (3) Father is identical; (4) 1child (Jannetie) is identical.
Allthis information in Epke-16 is supported by over 13 sources, whereas, Banta-1405 shows only 5 sources (generalized) and the FAG source in both is identical.

I have encountered a minor problem in this profile. I realize that some of this profile was complete by myself, but some was by other individuals.
We have Cornelius married to Jannetie in 1682 in the profile intro at the top. There are no concrete references for this date, and I mistaken estimated the date as 1670, which would have made Jannetie 12 at her marriage, my error. I have removed the Research Note I had for this and corrected the "Marriage" to eliminate a date.
Now problem I have found is that we have a daughter, Jannetje, listed born in 1674. Now this has to be incorrect, or the DoB for her is incorrect. I am pretty sure that Jannetie did not give birth before her marriage, not at 12 years of age. So the dilemma.
I do not want to make any further changes without Group okay, but the 1682 date listed in the top profile into needs to be eliminated and daughetr Jannetje (1674) needs to be removed, or DoB changes if it is known. Any insight into this is appreciated. There re some other areas of the profile this affects, so the are other changes needed. What now???
I eliminated Conflict note under the "Marriage" category and moved it to "Research Notes". Added new marriage date for Jannetie De Prec as stated in the "Research Notes". This marriage is confusing as there are so many different dates published on the internet sites. All research I have done, states that Jannetie is Cornelius' first wife, although Church records (as cited in profile) have a date of 3 April 1708, which would her the second wife. I am getting confused now, so enough. I recommend that until we all can agree on a date, or we can find the correct date, the date indicated (1670) be retained.
Perhaps I should have notified the Group first, but all I did was move a comment and change a date I edited put in back in January, plus based changes on children's date of birth. Perhaps all the children have a different mother then shown.
