Biography

Jared was born 20 Feb 1764 in Simsbury in the colony of Connecticut. He was the son of Daniel Barber and Martha Phelps. Daniel married Eunice Bissell and they raised at least one child.^[1]

He served as a soldier in the American Revolution and was alleged to have held the inkstand that General Washington used to sign the order of execution for Major Andre.^[2]

Jared was a resident of Sheldon, New York. He died 23 Jun 1826.^[3]

Research notes

Roswell and Betsy Barber were the parents of 5; Roswell and brother Jared were from Simsbury, CT; in Humphrey’s Hollow; Jared allegedly held inkstand for Washington’s signing of execution for English spy Major Andre; Barber family letters could be found in Cornell University library.^[4]

A Jared and Roswell Barber were early settlers of Sheldon, NY.^[5]
