Sarah Barclay was born in Pennsylvania according to information on the census reports for her from 1850-1880. SAR applications have her birthplace as Scotland, but since these are filled out by people and may not have supporting source information, it is more likely she was born in Pennsylvania.
Her parents were most probably Hugh Barclay and Anne Darrah. In Hugh's will, Greene County, Pennsylvania in 1826, before her marriage, he names one of his heirs as his daughter Sarah Barclay.
"...also I will and bequeath unto my two daughters Harriet Thompson and Sarah Barclay the farm I purchased called the Foster place and also eight acres of land adjoining the ridge school-house containing the whole one hundred and twenty-one acres land to be freely possessed and enjoyed by them immediately after my decease and also their heirs to be equally divided between them or otherwise for them to dispose of as they may think proper and also I direct that my aforesaid daughter Sarah Barclay share one sorrel mare, one new saddle, one bridle, one bed and bedding, one bureau, two cows, half dozen windsor chairs, half dozen knives and forks, half dozen plates, half dozen tea cups and saucers and half dozen tea spoons, one dinner pot & one Dutch oven, one table."[1]
This sounds much like a dowry, so she may have been betrothed at this time.
(He was equally generous with land and money to others in his large family, so it is clear this family was quite well to do. )
