Biography

(1) A family story suggested that Robert Barclay died about 3 months after the birth of his daugher, Mary Emma Barclay (i.e., c. January 1867). Catherine Barclay remarried to W.A. (William Alexander [7]) Hall. The son, William Barclay, was said to have been born in Scotland, while Mary Emma Barclay, was born in New York City. Therefore, the family immigrated between the two births. The census records for the Hall/Barclay family in 1860, 1870, and 1880 indicate that some of this information was not accurate (6, 19). For some reason, the 1870 census record was enumerated very late (i.e., 24 January, 1871) (19), but captured the family after the second marriage of Catherine Savage Barkley (Barclay) to William Alexander Hall on 30 October, 1870 (7). This makes the listed children not the children of William A. Hall. Moreover, the children are listed with the surname, Barkley. William and Emma are listed as the two youngest children. However, the four other Barclay siblings are listed: Robert, Annie, Kate, and Andrew (19). In 1880, the children are listed as having the surname, Hall, but the names and order are mostly the same: Robert, Catherine, Andrew, John W., and Mary E (19). A married daughter, Elizabeth Delaney, who is listed with a grandchild, Catherine, is the same person as Annie in the 1870 census record (19), because there also is a marriage record for Anna Barclay, daughter of Robert Barclay and Catherine Savage, to John Delaney in 1878 (8). The address given in the 1880 census matches that given in the marriage record of Laurie B. Robertson and Emma Barclay (426 16th Street, 7) (5, 19). In the 1870 census, all the children were listed as having been born in New York. However, the 1860 and 1880 censuses list the eldest, Robert, as having been born in Scotland, whereas the rest were born in New York (6, 19). The family sheet now reflects my conclusions based on all this information. occupation - shoemaker, clerk immigration: 8 October, 1852, Ship: Niagara (of New York), Port of Exit: Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland, Port of Entry: Manhattan, New York County, New York City, New York

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Robert by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Robert:
