Samuel was shot and killed while "playing the fiddle at the Inn-Fair held on the head of Buffalo Creek in Owsley County for the wedding of Jesse and Sally Collins Turner" on 8 Jan. 1876. He was buried at Abraham Barger Cemetery, Saul, Perry County, Kentucky. His memorial has biographical material and links to those of family members.[1]
