[Note: His second wife Susannah has been mistakenly identified as the daughter of John Peckham in several sources, which has been disproven, her LNAB is Saunders, daughter of Tobias. ]

Biography

Peter Barker was born about 1666, likely at Newport, Rhode Island, son of James and Barbara (Dungan) Barker. [1]

He resided first at Newport, then later removed to Westerly, Rhode Island, where he was a prosperous farmer. [2]

  • 1692: Peter, his wife Freelove and her mother Damaris were members of the Seventh Day Baptist Church at Newport. [1] [3]
  • 1696: Made a Freeman at Newport. [2]
  • 1704: 7: 15: (Oct. 15) Peter Barker and his wife were admonished by the church for missing their Sabbath, and the disorderly joining of another congregation. [3]
  • 1706: Peter Barker among those who received a deed for additional land for the church, being one of the church Trustees. [3]
  • 1708: July 25: Peter Barker and Freelove Barker, admitted to the Newport Sabbatarian Church. [4] [3]
  • 1712: February 15: Peter and wife Susanna signed a deed, selling land to Jeremiah Clarke, his mother Barbara's stepbrother. [1] [2]
  • 1714: Elected captain of the Second Company Newport, 1st Regiment of the Militia of the Islands. [2]
  • 1718: He and wife Susanna were members of the church at Westerly. [1]

Peter married first, in about 1692, Freelove Bliss. She was born on Nov. 16, 1672, daughter of John and Damaris (Arnold) Bliss. Freelove died between 1708 and 1712. [1] [2] [5]

He married second in about 1712, Susanna Saunders the daughter of Tobias and Mary (Peckham) Saunders. [1] [6]

Peter died at Westerly in 1725, and was buried on farmland he originally owned at Westerly, in the Bliven burying ground, that is now called the Edward Bliven Lot. [7] [2] [8]

Administration of his estate was on Dec. 7, 1725; Bondsmen Edward Bliven and Joseph Barker. His wife Susanna also had Bondsmen: her brothers Edward and Stephen Saunders. [1] [6]

Inventory of estate of Peter Barker made Dec. 9, 1725: [Westerly, RI Council and Probate Records Vol 2. file 6: p. 171.] [6] and was valued at L902:5s: 2d. [2]

Capt. James Babcock is appointed guardian to Barbara and Susannah Barker, children of Peter Barker, deceased, of Westerly Aug. 28, 1732.[ fol 9: p 44.] (p. 198) [6]

After his death his widow Susanna married Peter Wells of South Kington, Rhode Island, as his second wife. [2] [9]
