Biography

Bessie was born on 30 March 1885 on Wolf Island Township in Frontenac, Ontario, Canada. Her parents were listed as Jesse Barker and Emma Smythe. ^[1]

When she was 6 years old there was a Canada Census, and she was recorded with her family at her home in Kingston, Frontenac, Canada. ^[2]

By 1901 her family had moved to Alberta and they were recorded on the 1901 census in ^[3] She graduated from nursing school in Calgary in 1910. ^[4]

She married Peter King Stuttard in Calgary, Alberta, Canada in 1915. ^[5] Later that year Peter enlisted in the military in October of 1915 and he had a long career with them.

In 1921 they were recorded living on the farm in Vermillion Valley, Alberta. Peter was 35 and Bessie was 26 years old. ^[6]

Sadly her husband Peter was swept away at sea to his death near the Azores during a storm on 17 March 1938. ^[4]

"STUTTARD--On March 17, 1938, washed overboard and drowned whilst on passage from Vancouver Island to Hull, England. Peter K. Stuttard, aged 51. Late of Port Alberni, B. C. Served in France with 9th Battalion Canadian Engineers. Survived by his wife, Mrs. Bessie Stuttard c/o Mrs. Barker, 104 Rochdale Road, Halifax, Yorks, England, also mother, sister and one brother in England." ~ The Vancouver Sun, 11 Apr 1938 ^[7]

Bessie went to live with her mother-in-law Ida Z K Becker in England. In 1939 they were recorded together with a housekeeper at 104 Rochdale Rd, Halifax, Yorkshire (West Riding), England. Ida was 81 years old and a widow. Bessie was She was listed as a widow and her full date of birth as 30 Mar 1885. ^[8]

She passed away on 16 Jun 1959 at the Vancouver General Hospital in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada at the age of 74 years. Her cremation was on 19 Jun 1959 at Garden Chapel Ocean View in Burnaby, British Columbia at Evergreen Gardens, Section F.31.31.^{[9] [4]} Her obituary read.

"STUTTARD--Passed away June 16, 1959, Bessie, widow of Peter K. Stuttard of 1272 W. 12th Ave., in her 75th year. Survived by 1 brother, Doctor Mark Barker, Calgary; also several nieces and nephews in B.C., Alberta, Ontario and England. The deceased was a member of the W.A. to Christ Church Cathedral and a member of the Harbour Light Guild W.A. of the Missions to Seaman. Funeral service Friday at 2:30 p.m. in Christ Church Cathedral, Georgia and Burrard St., Reverend G. W. Hillary officiating. Cremation, Garden Chapel, Ocean View. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Anglican Missions to Seamen or the W.A. to Christ Church Cathedral. Simmons & McBride, Broadway at Maple St., funeral directors in charge." ~The Province, 18 Jun 1959 ^[10]
