Biography

  • Mary Barker was born on the 24th of November 1793 to Abner Barker and Lydia Osborn in Randolph County, North Carolina.[1][2][3][4][5]
  • In June of 1794 Abner moved his family, consisting of his wife, Lydia, his son, Nathan, and his daughter, Mary, from Orange County to Randolph County in North Carolina.
    • On the 3rd of May 1794 Lydia request a certificated for herself, her husband (Abner) and her two children (Nathan and Mary).[6]
    • On the 7th of June 1794 Abner Barker received a certificate for himself and his family, to the Back Creek Monthly Meeting from the Cane Creek Monthly Meeting.[7][8]
    • On the 28 of June 1794 Abner and his son Nathan received by certificate from the Cane Creek Monthly Meeting into membership at the Back Creek Monthly Meeting.[9][10]
  • The 1800 U. S. census finds Ruth's family living in Randolph Township, Randolph County, North Carolina.[11] In addition to her parents she has two sisters and a brother. See Research Note 2
  • In winter of 1804/1805 Mary moved with her family from Randolph County, North Carolina to Marlboro County, South Carolina.[1]
    • On the 24th of November 1804 Abner Barker requested, in the men's meeting, a certificate from Back Creek Monthly Meeting (Randolph, North Carolina) to Piney Grove Monthly Meeting (Marlboro County, South Carolina) for himself and his three sons (Nathan, Nicholas and Allen).[12] His wife, Lydia, made a similar request in the women's meeting for herself and her four daughters (Mary, Hannah, Ruth and Phebe).[13]
    • On the 29th of December 1804 the monthly meeting was not held due to small turn out as a consequence of the extreme weather. The only business discussed was Lydia Barker's request for a certificate. The friends appointed to produce the certificate report that their work is not complete and the matter is referred to the next monthly meeting.[14][15]
    • On the 12th of January 1805 the men's meeting met to take up the business missed in the December meeting. The men's meeting found that Abner's affair were not satisfactorily concluded and that consequently they could not produce a certificate.[16]
    • On the 26th of January 1805 the women's meeting produced a certificate for Lydia and her daughters.[17]
    • On the 28th of September 1805 Abner's request for a certificate was revisited and it as found that the issue was not sufficient to detain his certificate.[18]
    • On the 16th of November 1805 Abner Barker and his son's (Nathan, Nicholas, and Allen) were received by certificate from Back Creek Monthly Meeting (Randolph, North Carolina) to Piney Grove Monthly Meeting (Marlboro County, South Carolina).[19] See Research Note 3
  • The 1810 U. S. census finds Ruth's family living in Marlboro County, South Carolina.[20] In addition to her parents she has four brothers and three sisters. See Research Note 4
  • In 1813, at the age of 20, Mary moved with her parents from Marlboro County, South Carolina back to Randolph County, North Carolina.[1]
    • On the 20th of November 1813 Abner requested a certificate for himself and his family from the Piney Grove Monthly Meeting (Marlboro County, South Carolina) to the Cane Creek Monthly Meeting (Alamance, North Carolina)[21] See Research Note 3
    • On the 18th of December 1813 the certificate, which Abner had requested for himself and his family, was produced and signed.[22]
    • On the 4th of June 1814 Abner presented his certificate from Piney Grove Monthly Meeting, it was accepted and he and his sons were received into membership at Cane Creek Monthly Meeting. Lydia presented her certificate in the women's meeting, it was accepted and she and her daughters (Mary, Hannah, Ruth, and Phebe) were received into the Society.[23][24]
  • On the 20th of October 1814 Mary married John Davis in Randolph County, North Carolina.[1] Mary Barker and John Davis were married at the same time as Nathan (Mary's brother) married Ruth Davis (John Davis's sister).
  • For the next 18 years Mary lived in Randolph County, Indiana with her husband and raise a family of 10 children (six boys and 4 girls).[1]
  • In 1832 Mary and her family immigrated to Indiana. They initially stopped in Hendricks County, Indiana before continuing on settle on a farm northeast of Westfield, Hamilton County, Indiana in 1836.[1]
  • Mary lived on the farm with her husband until he died on 2nd of August 1878.[1]
  • Mary died on the 30th of January 1890 at the age of 96 years, 2 months and 7 days in Westfield, Hamilton County, Indiana.[5]
  • Mary was mother to twelve children, ten of which survived to adulthood.[1]
